Februaury 2016 Newsletter
From the Pastor's Desk
It feels like Christmas was just yesterday, it’s so hard to believe that it is that time that we as a church start talking about Lent. I know that this is not the first time this has happened but it still catches me off guard. It seems strange to move from the anticipation, joy, and wonder of Christmas into a time of contemplation, prayer, penance, and self-denial. However, Ash Wednesday is February 10th, and we have to recognize that just as Christianity can bring celebration it also calls us to deep thinking, spiritual renewal, and the understanding that faith often means sacrifice.
Lent is the time in which we reflect on the brokenness and evil within our lives and in our society. For many this means that Lent is a time of darkness and depression, but the ultimate goal of this season is to remind us that God can overcome all of these obstacles, forgive our sins, restore our broken souls, and transform us through the glory of Christ. These forty days should look and feel different. The sanctuary does not look the same, the music changes, and the sermons hold unique themes. Yet through it all we remember what is coming, Easter and the triumph this celebration will bring. You cannot appreciate the light unless you know and experience darkness.
This year we have several wonderful things planned for this Lenten season. One of the things I am very excited about is Holy Week Noon Devotions that we will be doing this year, this will be new for our church. I will be moderating these devotions by offering a welcome and a prayer but we will have the privilege to experience some ecumenical flavor as I have invited various Pastors from the community to lead these devotions. This is something that I am hoping will become a Memorial Baptist Church tradition. Everyone is invited. If you are used to giving up something for Lent perhaps this year you can take on these worship services as a spiritual discipline that will bring you closer to God.
We also have several other services planned that will help all of us to grow spiritually and theologically. The Noon devotions might have been my idea, but I give all the praise to God for seeing how Barb and Barry prayerfully planned our worship experiences for this Lenten season. I am so excited about what God is doing at Memorial Baptist Church and I am looking forward to experiencing the resurrection with you for the first time as your Pastor this Easter!
It is my hope that during Lent you will take the time to look deeply within yourself, recognize what needs to be transformed within you, ask God for forgiveness, and rededicate your life to the good news that is Jesus Christ. Let us enter this season together and as one family discover what God has in store for our lives and for the life of the church.
Remember, God’s will for us is good, we must do the rest!
Blessings,
Rev. Scott Murphy

Spring Fling
Mark your calendar: Sunday, March 20th
Former University of Kentucky Basketball Star, Cameron Mills, will be sharing his testimony of how Christ has impacted his life at our church during the Sunday morning worship service on March 20th. 2016.
Cameron is a very close friend of our Pastor, Rev. Scott Murphy. We encourage you to invite your friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, classmates, teammates, etc, etc to church that Sunday. One of the reasons Pastor Scott chose to invite Cameron in March is the fact that ...the NCAA tournament will be going on at the same time.
Recruited by many Division 1 schools he chose to play at his father’s alma mater and play for Coach Rick Pitino at the University of Kentucky. He was part of UK’s 1996 NCAA championship team and was awarded a scholarship for the next two years. During UK’s run back to the final game in 1997 Cameron played a major role hitting 61% from the field (63% from the three-point line).
In 1998, under Coach Tubby Smith, he hit a pivotal shot against archrival Duke to send UK back to the Final Four for the third straight year. He hit two clutch three-pointers during the second half of the championship win against Utah. Cameron is still UK’s all-time leader in three-point percentage for a season at 53.2% and for a career at 47.4%.
Though basketball has been a big part of Cameron’s life, his calling since he was twelve has been ministry. In June of 1998, he began Cameron Mills Ministries, Inc. Since then Cameron has been speaking to schools, youth groups, and churches. He has held revivals and spoken at Christian music festivals, college chapels, among other events.
