Where Everyone Has the Power to be a Leader, Including You!
EPIC Carnival - fall 2014 is in the books!
Again I want to send out a HUGE THANK YOU to Felipe, Adrian, Lisa, Vasty, Kelly for organizing such a fantastic carnival!!!! It could not have been accomplished without everyone's help - whether in preparation or during the event to keep things running. The kids and families had a blast, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I saw all of you who were there smiling and having fun too! I can't wait for next year!!!
Tuesday and Wednesday PLC meetings
Reminder that this week teams will review the most current data from district assessments in reading and math to identify:
*TEKS that have been taught and students should do well on but did not (less than 70% and what intervention needs to happen ASAP)
*TEKS that may have been introduced but not to the extent of student mastery (use this information to determine instructional decisions)
*TEKS that have not been taught or just introduced (use these as pre-assessments to inform instructional decisions)

"In times of change, learners inherit the earth while the learned find themselves bautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists." Eric Hoffer
Thank you to those who responded to this quote:
I believe that learning is a continual process that will never be a "completed" action. The world is forever changing, and we as educators must continue to change with it. If we don't, our practices will then become out dated for our current times.
I feel like we should always be teaching our children how to think for themselves, problem solve and prepare for the future. My goal as a music teacher is to create a lifelong love of music, whether students play an instrument, sing in their church choir, or just sing to their children.
If things are changing around us, we need to continue to keep learning to keep up with the changes otherwise we will be left behind.
I think that we need to be life long learners and need to encourage our students to have a love of learning. Learning doesn't necessarily mean academics, although that is a huge part. If we are always willing to learn and grow then we can be better prepared for what the ever changing future has in store for us.
I most certainly hope with all my heart that is m creating growing learners, so that they can independently make responsible decisions , and lifelong learners. We as adults never stop learning . I am still learning and I will probably acquire more knowledge until my last breath because I am very inquisitive. If I don't know the answer I will find a way to access the unknown.
Yes, it’s vital that the kids learn HOW to learn and understand that those skills will continue to benefit them for the rest of their lives as they continue their education and their careers. As the world changes, they will have to change to keep up. These changes can include scientific, medical, technological, social, and even political. No career, country, family or individual will be left untouched. Being unprepared is not an option. That includes us as teachers.

Parent Conferences
I know some of you have already had several parent conferences. If you did not send home the report card brochure from the district, please do so this week. For those parents you will be meeting with, please be sure and send home the brochure when they leave the conference.
Reminder - it is an expectation that ALL parents have face-to-face conferences. In the event a mutually agreeable date/time cannot be reached, a phone conference will suffice. Please let Patricia or I know if you cannot get in touch with a parent so we can arrange a home visit.
All conferences need to be complete by Friday. Oct. 31.

Perot Museum Field Trip
It's hard to believe but we will be loading 540+/- students, 55+ staff and over 40 parent chaperones onto 13 buses and heading south for a fabulous field trip to the Perot Museum. For some that's a recipe for disaster, others would say we are crazy, but I'm excited and fired up to give this opportunity to our students!!!
Please use the forms Melisa created and sent to everyone last week. She created individual schedules for everyone including lunch time and locations of restrooms!!! Thanks, Melisa for doing this!!!!
I will be driving Bertha's Suburban with lunches piled in and head down in front of the buses to check in and get all the appropriate tickets and such. Melisa's mom, Ada Sparks, will be going with me to help - she might even have to haul some lunches:)
Reminder: We will wear our ORANGE shirts with BLACK pants, skirts, capris and comfortable shoes (yes tennis shoes will be fine). We truly do look sharp in this ensemble and I want to 'represent' Burks in high class;)
Each class will pack the lunches into a large garbage bag and label with class name. The garbage bag will then be used for the trash:)
Refer to last week's Smore to locate the links to the museum including: TEKS connections, map of the museum and highlights of each learning hall. The more prepared our students are for the trip, the more they will take away from it.
Finally, please, please, please notify Lisa of any students that have not yet turned in their signed permission slips. She has graciously volunteered to call those parents and verify their child's attendance on the trip.
