Marian Catholic School

Principal's Reflection

Kia Ora Koutou

Kia ora e te whanau and welcome back to Term 3.

And just like that we have completed half of the school year.

I trust you have all enjoyed a good holiday break and are in good health and ready for the start of Term 3. Hopefully the holidays have provided an opportunity for rest and everyone is ready for the second half of the year.

Term 3 has started by getting straight down to business. The students have settled quickly into their curriculum learning which is based around the ‘Quest’ theme this term. We have also started our numeracy programme with a high level of intensity having Bruce Moody in the school. Bruce is an ex secondary teacher and very experienced facilitator of mathematics. He is working across parts of the school but mainly within our LC3 team to further strengthen the numeracy programme.

It certainly has been an interesting year to date dominated by Covid and the Flu. At the end of last term we had to deal with a large number of students and staff away. Despite all the obstacles we managed to keep the school operating and we saw some successful results achieved by the students. Let's all say a few prayers that the worst has passed and it is full steam ahead this term.

With our Term 3 focus firmly directed on ‘quest’, I leave you all with the following whakatauki:

I orea te tuatara ka patu ki waho

A problem is solved by continuing to find solutions

This whakatauki refers to the need for creative thinking, adaptability and perseverance. In order to solve a problem you need to have all of these.

Kia manaaki te Atua koutou katoa

Gospel Reflection

Jesus teaches the disciples about prayer. Luke 11:1-13

This week’s gospel highlights the importance of prayer. The Apostles ask Jesus to teach them to pray. Jesus teaches them a simple version of the most famous Christian prayer, the Our Father, or the Lord's Prayer. Jesus reassures the Apostles that God answers prayers.

Prayer is communicating with God. Spending time in prayer helps us to remember God’s presence in our lives and keeps us open to seeing it.

Charism Focus

The Charism at Marian School is LIVE CHRIST - Be the Hands, Face and Voice and Jesus.

This Term the Charism value is LIVE FAITH. We are focusing on-

“revealing who we are, by living what we believe…

Marian School is a Catholic School, a school where we have a special character that makes us different from other schools. At Marian Catholic School, we live and teach the gospel values. Living our faith and belief in God shows ‘who we are’ at Marian.

We are able to learn from the example of our founders, Euphrasie Barbier and Marcellin Champagnat - who both trusted in God and lived their lives with a great belief and faith.

So what does this mean to us at Marian School? We are all called to show our faith in God, through our words and actions. We need for people to recognise that the students and staff at Marian school are Christians and followers of Christ … We need to pass on the love that we receive, and share that love of Jesus in our actions and words.

School Board elections happen every three years and give parents a say in the future of our school. As we have a number of our present elected Board members standing down, some of them no longer have children at Marian, we do need parents to put their names forward. If you are passionate about the education and future of our children then why not stand for our Board. Board members play an important role in shaping the education experience and achievements of our students. Boards work best when they reflect the diversity of their communities.

The present Board encourages parents with a range of experiences, different skill sets and interests to be involved and represent our community on the Board. It is a big responsibility and a true privilege.
