From the Student Support Counselor
Parents,
I hope that everyone had a well-rested holiday season, and that the flu was avoided at your house!
I had a request a while back to delve into the topic of e-cigarettes. It has taken me a while to find quality research on this topic. Many sites out there have a definite pro stance on this subject, as well as those that are directly opposed. Where to go in this situation? The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and see what the true research is showing on this ever-popular teen trend. I mean, it’s not smoke. How bad could it be? Well, you might want to read on….
Traditional cigarette smoking among teens has fallen drastically, only to be replaced by e-cigarettes-what your kid may be calling vaping. A term, I think, to deliberately deter from the term “smoking” to make it appear to be something entirely different. It is not different as far as the health risks associated with this habit. As with traditional cigarettes, nicotine addiction is a distinct possibility, especially considering that e-cigs are the most commonly used tobacco product among youth in the U.S.-use has grown 900% among high school students between 2011 and 2015. Nope. That IS NOT a typo. 900%! Many of today’s e-cig users will become tomorrow’s traditional cigarette smokers due to this addiction. It is also known that nicotine exposure to the developing adolescent brain can cause brain development issues that can not only affect physical health, but also mental health as well. Risks include addiction, priming for use of other addictive substances, reduced impulse control, deficits in attention and cognition, and mood disorders. Previous research has proven that nearly all habitual tobacco use begins during youth and young adulthood.
And to me, that’s not even the scariest part! The effects and potentially harmful doses of heated and aerosolized ingredients of e-cig liquids, which include solvents, flavorings, and other toxic substances-is not completely understood. That’s right. Although the amount of toxins is lower in e-cigs in general, what is known about these toxins and the aerosol from them, is not harmless-as your teen may be telling you. Truth is, no one can really say yet what the long-term effects of these aerosolized ingredients are, much less tell you what all is in that liquid. The most often-cited reason teens and young adults try e-cigs-curiosity, flavorings, and the lower perceived harm of these products. Think again, Johnny.
Oh, and if this isn’t bad enough, many teens are now using these e-cigs as delivery devices for marijuana and other illicit drugs. Oh, goody!
Part of the reason that these devices have found such a favored spot for teens and young adults is the pricing and the marketing. Prices have dropped dramatically and when this occurred, usage amount 18-24 year olds skyrocketed. Marketing went from seeking out older traditional smokers wanting a means to help quit, to targeting young adults. These products are marketed on a wide range of channels that have a broad reach and themes in this marketing include sexual content, customer satisfaction, and liken back to how traditional cigarettes used to be advertised on tv.
The good news? The CDC is now working to apply the strategies that were effective at curbing traditional cigarette advertising and also reaching out to public health agencies, researchers, clinicians, and government. The CDC sees the use of e-cigarettes among youth and young adults as an urgent health problem and feel now is the time to take action. Let’s hope that action has an impact.
As always, I am just an e-mail or phone call away with comments, questions, etc.
