Parkhill Primary School Newsletter
Issue 29, Thursday 19th 2019
Dear Parents/Carers
It’s the end of term! How quickly the last 10 weeks have gone and how much learning has happened –swimming, science week, inquiry, STEAM, MADD day, sports, PHTV, garden, bush tucker, digital coding and lots, lots more… the children are exhausted and ready for a well-earned break!
FOOTY COLOURS DAY
Tomorrow we have our Footy Colours day organised by Andrea Crane and the Student Representative Council (SRC). Children across the school come dressed in their favourite Footy Colours whether that be AFL, Rugby or Soccer. We have a variety of activities happening throughout the day, with the parade as the Grand Finale! It would be awesome to see some parents in their colours join us for the parade at 2 p.m. We finish at 2:30pm on this day!
Obviously a special high five is available to all who wear the mighty yellow and black…
HOLIDAY FUN
It will soon be the holidays – a great time to relax and enjoy some fun activities! There are heaps of free things to do with our children…

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING:
Enjoying some down time during holidays is important – families enjoy activities and quiet time. We all welcome the break. However for some of us the idea of our children being together for two weeks is a little less than exciting – constant fighting, arguing and competition is exhausting. Here are some tips for you to help combat those sibling moments…

OTHER:
Photography and videoing
It has been noted that lots of you are keen to video and take photographs of your children during school events and assemblies – I completely understand and do the same thing of my own children. It’s great to gather the memories and share their successes with family etc. It is important to note that we do have families at school who do not want their children photographed and posted on social media. I know this is an ever increasing challenge and am mindful of the difficult nature of these things in this day and age. However going into term 4 we will remind you at every event to be considerate and respectful with the content you record. You will see and hear the following statement regularly:
We acknowledge that you may wish to film your child in presentations. When doing so and sharing the content, please be considerate of others.
Hats
Every month with an ‘R’ is hat time… please do make sure your child has their hat with them every day in term 4!
Toys at school
We would like your help in discouraging children from bringing lots of precious toys to school. Often children bring a favourite toy and it stays in their bag, or something for show and tell or to play with at recess/lunch. These toys are ok for children to bring to school – but please do discourage them from bringing precious things to school. At school things get broken and lost and children become quite distressed and unable to focus on their day if this happens.
Please do check out the calendar dates below for the next terms events.
Have a wonderful holiday.

STEAM F/1
In Science this week, the Foundation and Y1 students explored how toys move. They investigated the push and pull forces and how these forces affected how the toys moved.
Writing F/1T
In F/1T we have been learning to write a narrative. We begin with a Sizzling Start and Tighten the Tension with a problem. We start with a small problem, (pebble) then a little larger problem, (rock) and then a huge problem, (boulder). We think of a solution to the problem and end with an Exciting Ending.
We begin writing our narrative by planning the story using a story graph.
Then we write the story.
The Wicked Witch and the Little Girl.
Written by Andy, Keira, Chloe, Jessica, Owen, Fiona and Seb.
Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh! There was an evil witch flying across the thundery sky. The witch landed at a castle where a little girl lived. The wicked witch found a box in the garden. Inside the box the witch found a map of the castle and it showed where the little girl was inside the castle. The witch followed the map to the little girl’s bedroom and tied the little girl to her broomstick.
The witch flew away with the little girl tied to the broomstick. The little girl was able to untie her hands and she pulled a mirror from her pocket. The witch turned around to a cast a spell on the little girl. The witch yelled,” Turn the little girl into a blob of yellow paint.” The spell hit the mirror the little girl was holding and reflected back onto the witch. The witch turned into a blob of yellow paint and then the broomstick turned yellow. The broomstick flew the little girl safely home.
F/1T’s Day at Rippon Lea
We played olden day games!
We worked as servants!
And we explored the amazing garden!

Science Week in Y5/6
Every wondered about how a rainbow is formed or how images seen though water bend or appear flipped? Well, we no longer wonder about these things in Y5/6 as we spent the week exploring physical science, particularly light boxes, the light spectrum and the process of refraction.
Students had a great time, splitting light with prisms and imitating white light by recombining the colours of the light spectrum. Later in the week we wowed each other flipping images using water and the power of refraction. It’s great to see our students expanding their science knowledge!

Ashwood High School's House Performing Arts Festival
Our Y5/6 students were privileged to attend Ashwood High School’s House Performing Arts festival on Tuesday 10th September.
Ashwood students wowed our senses as they inspired us with their musical mastery, dancing delights and acting accomplishments. What a fabulous way to showcase the vast talents of students across the school.
Choir Connections
We have had another wonderful term of choir and the feedback from our assembly performance has warmed our hearts and continues to motivate our choir, so much so we have a very exciting program for Term 4.
Mark in your calendar now Tuesday 12th November is the date for our Choir Spectacular. This fabulous evening performance will run from 6-7pm and the choir will be performing our full repertoire from the year and some new additions we are secretely working on.
This event is open to the Parkhill School Community – family, friends and special people. For our current Foundation students who may be thinking of joining the choir next year we would encourage you to come along and see what a choir rehearsal is all about.
More details will follow in Term 4, with notices in the School Newsletter and Facebook.
We will also be performing at Fun, Food and Carols some rousing Christmas Carols to kick off the festive celebrations.
With all of this to prepare for, choir rehearsal will be on as usual this Friday 20th September.

PARKHILL COLOUR RUN FUNDRAISER
Friday 8th November
This year, we will not be using a third party to run the online donations, so it will run a bit differently. This is great news because it means that more of the donations received will go directly to the school.
Once again, we are asking for your support by donating via a fundraising website. The children can create an online profile with a unique URL just like last year. They can then share this URL with friends and family via email or social media to ask for their support.
2. Scroll down to Sign up as a Fundraiser link at the bottom of the web page to make an individual fundraising profile for your child.
NOTE: Chuffed.org only allows one child profile per email address, so please use a different email address for each child. If this is not an option, try setting up a profile for your family but you will only be able to assign your funds to one class if this is the case.
3. Fill in your child’s details and add an image for your child (the image does not have to be their photo).
4. Choose your child’s class under the Team drop down box.
6. Share your child's unique link to their fundraising profile with friends and family.
7. Donations can be made via credit card.
8. Your child's profile is also editable. Go to the member symbol in the right corner of the website.
What we are doing with the funds:
We are going crazy for colour again this year to raise money for the school to fund the ongoing creation of exciting, new outdoor play spaces around the new school buildings, particularly the area where the old portables have been removed.
Large scale play equipment and landscaping is very expensive, (think in hundreds of thousands), which is why we are continuing to fundraise to provide safe, fun and interesting play spaces for the children.
A fun afternoon for the kids:
The theme is Get Active and LEGO and the dress code is a white or light coloured T-shirt that can be splashed with colour powder as they run!
We will again be looking for volunteers on the day to help get them all covered in colour. Look out for the sign up in next term’s newsletter.
Don’t forget the colour powder is very safe and is made from cornflour and food dye.
Winning Class and Prizes:
Children will be able to earn a thankyou reward for their fundraising efforts (Get Active and LEGO) and there will be a special surprise reward for all children in the class that raises the greatest amount of money.
A flier of items available as a thankyou gift will go home with the children on Friday and be available on Facebook and through Flexibuzz too. Depending on how much is fundraised, your child can choose one awesome prize from that category.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the office or Vanessa on 0439 356 931.
