Veteran's Day
As you know, tomorrow is Veteran's Day. I am always appreciative of our veterans, but this year I am keenly reminded of their sacrifice. You see, on Sunday, my son left the country for his third deployment since joining the United States Air Force. This week, students wrote letters and made cards for our local veterans, which were delivered to the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War posts. We are also in the process of writing to service men and women overseas. This highlights the following Social Studies Indiana Academic Standard:
- "Explain the importance of being a responsible citizen* of your community, the state and the nation. Identify people in your community and the state who exhibit the characteristics of good citizenship."
Speaking of real-world writing tasks... We have obtained friendly pen pals from a class near South Bend, Indiana. Students from Walkerton Elementary have already sent letters of introduction to our students, and we are working on the final copies of our thoughtful responses. This long-term project meets the following academic standard:
- "Write routinely over a variety of time frames and for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences; apply reading standards to write in response to literature and nonfiction texts."
ixl At-Home Opportunity
In today's folder you will find login information for yet another exciting learning opportunity for your child. We have been using ixl since the beginning of the year in our classroom, but the school district has purchased a site license for an even broader use. Just like Reflex math, students have loved ixl.com.
Next Week's Share Topic
Feeling Thankful: Thanksgiving is upon us. What three things are you most thankful for in your life? Be sure to support your choices with reasons and examples. Students will be expounding on this topic with their writing next week.
Family Fun and Fitness Night
As you know, students participated in World Cup Stacking Day on Thursday. They are continuing these skills in P.E. class. The Family Fun and Fitness Night that is scheduled for November 16 will be cup stacking-related and we hope you can come. Remember, students must be accompanied by an adult. The best part is that each participating family will be placed in a drawing to a chance to win their own cups!
