Lyrics Analysis

[Verse 1]

If you ask any girl from the parish around

What pleases her most from her head to her toes

She'll say I'm not sure that it's business of yours

But I do like to waltz with a log driver

>Meaning: Every girl around lowkey wants a to dance with a log driver, even if she won't admit it

[Chorus]

For he goes birling down and down white water

That's where the log driver learns to step lightly

Yes, birling down and down white water

The log driver's waltz pleases girls completely

>Meaning: As the log driver goes down rough water with harsh currents (enough to cause whitecaps) he has to be able to step lightly which pleases girls because it makes them very njce dancing companions

[Verse 2]

When the drive's nearly over I like to go down

And watch all the lads as they work on the river

I know that come evening they'll be in the town

And we all like to waltz with the log driver

>Meaning: when the log drivers are almost done taking the logs down stream, she likes to go watch them and knows later they will be out on the town to relax and celebrate a hard day of work

[Verse 3]

To please both my parents, I've had to give way

And dance with the doctors and merchants and lawyers

Their manners are fine, but their feet are of clay

And there's none with the style of my log driver

>Meaning: To make her parents happy, she danced/went out with many rich suitors and while they had very nice manners, their dancing was like dancing with a man with clay feet compared to dancing with a log driver

[Verse 4]

Now I've had my chances with all sorts of men

But none as so fine as my lad on the river

So when the drive's over, if he asks me again

I think I will marry my log driver

>Meaning:she has been with many different types of men but none make her swoon like her log driver so when he's done with his next drive, she will say yes if he asks her to marry him

[Chorus]

For he goes birling down and down white water

That's where the log driver learns to step lightly

Yes, birling down and down white water

The log driver's waltz pleases girls completely

Birling down and down white water

The log driver's waltz pleases girls completely

>Meaning: As the log driver goes down rough water with harsh currents (enough to cause whitecaps) he has to be able to step lightly which pleases girls because it makes them very njce dancing companions

Song Origin

The song originated by celebrating the (19th-early 20th Century) profession of log driving. There was a time where half of the able-bodied men in Canada worked in the winter as lumberjacks. The logs were stacked up on frozen lakes, waiting for the spring to come and thaw them. Most of the timber men went home when the warm weather arrived, but some stayed for the high pay involved in becoming a log driver: These men would run along the floating logs to shepherd them down the stream. A jam could be a seriously dangerous situation, requiring a great deal of strength and agility to reach the problem, correct it, and then escape with your life once the logs started moving again. Hemsworth was struck by how much the sight of log drivers at work resembled dancing. Then, the log drivers were paid off at the end of the drive, and stereotypically went into town to spend their money, where they were seen as the lowest level in the social chain. It would have been a scandal for a nice young girl to be courted by a man so poor and desperate that he could find no better employment during the spring season than to risk life and limb on the cold flood waters.

Diffusion of Folk Song

This song diffused through the locals in Canada with the spread of mouth. When it was first introduced into society, it immediately became popular due to its relatability at the time. Many men were log drivers and many women knew a log driver or wanted to get to know one. This trend, along with the catchy tune of the song began the diffusion through regions of canada where log driving was an integral part of the society and economy. Then, in 1978, the Log Driver's Waltz was made part of the short film Canadian Vignettes series by NFB spreading the song throughout all parts of canada and making it a new element in Canadian folk culture.

Lyrics

Oh whoa [x3]

You know you love me, I know you care

Just shout whenever, and I'll be there

You are my love, you are my heart

And we would never ever ever be apart

Are we an item? Girl, quit playing

We're just friends, what are you saying?

Say there's another and look right in my eyes

My first love broke my heart for the first time

And I was like...

Baby, baby, baby oooh

Like baby, baby, baby nooo

Like baby, baby, baby oooh

I thought you'd always be mine (mine)

Baby, baby, baby oooh

Like baby, baby, baby nooo

Like baby, baby, baby oooh

I thought you'd always be mine (mine)

Oh, for you I would have done whatever

And I just can't believe we ain't together

And I wanna play it cool, but I'm losin' you

I'll buy you anything, I'll buy you any ring

And I'm in pieces, baby fix me

And just shake me 'til you wake me from this bad dream

I'm going down, down, down, down

And I just can't believe my first love won't be around

And I'm like

Baby, baby, baby oooh

Like baby, baby, baby nooo

Like baby, baby, baby oooh

I thought you'd always be mine (mine)

Baby, baby, baby oooh

Like baby, baby, baby nooo

Like baby, baby, baby oooh

I thought you'd always be mine (mine)

[Ludacris:]

Luda! When I was 13, I had my first love,

There was nobody that compared to my baby

And nobody came between us or could ever come above

She had me going crazy, oh, I was star-struck,

She woke me up daily, don't need no Starbucks.

She made my heart pound, it skipped a beat when I see her in the street and

At school on the playground but I really wanna see her on the weekend.

She knows she got me dazing cause she was so amazing

And now my heart is breaking but I just keep on saying...

Baby, baby, baby oooh

Like baby, baby, baby nooo

Like baby, baby, baby oooh

I thought you'd always be mine (mine)

Baby, baby, baby oooh

Like baby, baby, baby nooo

Like baby, baby, baby oooh

I thought you'd always be mine (mine)

I'm gone (Yeah Yeah Yeah, Yeah Yeah Yeah)

Now I'm all gone (Yeah Yeah Yeah, Yeah Yeah Yeah)

Now I'm all gone (Yeah Yeah Yeah, Yeah Yeah Yeah)

Now I'm all gone (gone, gone, gone...)

I'm gone
