Message from Mrs. Erb...
Friday's parent concern - "Furthermore, I also object to usage of the term Christmas. Not everyone celebrates Christmas & this is not considerate of everyone's traditions and beliefs. Holiday party would've been much more suitable."
I've included part of the AR below, in case you are interested.
Administrative Regulation EHBK(R1)
It is the belief of Keller ISD that the recognition of holidays provides a life application opportunity for developing cultural awareness and appreciation. Therefore, the following guidelines have been developed to outline expected practices in alignment with this philosophy while maintaining compliance with state and federal law. Holidays are any event that is recognized as an annual state, national or religious holiday including but not limited to Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Winter religious/customary celebrations (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, etc.), Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday, Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day. This does not supersede those holiday observances required by Board policy.
Instruction:
- Instruction and activities related to holidays must be in alignment with district curriculum.
- Literature selections must be varied to provide an appreciation for various holiday cultures and customs.
- Personal beliefs should not interfere with providing a comprehensive appreciation for other cultural practices or beliefs.
- School-wide holiday experiences not aligned with the curriculum should not impede instructional time for more than 1 hour/week.
- Instruction involving holidays should remain neutral in nature without direct evidence of religious preferences.
- Holiday related field trips are not permissible. All field trips must align with the regulation guidelines regarding field trips.
