New Research from John Hattie
I confess: I totally geeked out when I heard about Hattie's new book. Thanks to Amazon Prime, I am the proud owner of Visible Learning for Literacy: Implementing the Practices That Work Best to Accelerate Student Learning by Fisher, Frey, and Hattie. Jealous?!
Here are some key points from the book:
Visible learning for literacy is important for several reasons:
- Literacy is among the major antidotes for poverty
- Literacy makes your life better
- Literate people have more choices in their work and personal lives, leading to greater freedom
- Literacy is great at teaching you how to think successively- that is, making meaning one step at a time to then build a story
- Literacy soon becomes the currency of other learning
As a divsion, we have studied Effect Sizes to better determine our impact as educators on student achievment. Remember: Effect size represents the magnitude of the impact that a given approach has. An effect size of 0.4 is an influence worth doing!
Hattie has added a few new influences to his list since his last publication. Here are the new additions of effective influences:
- Response to intervention 1.07
- Teacher credibility 0.90
- Classroom discussion 0.82
- Student-centered teaching 0.54
FINISH STRONG and MAKE AN IMPACT!
