Monday Musings

Weekly Update for Douglas Staff - January 18, 2016

Last week of the semester...

Here we are at the midpoint of the school year. Time flies when you're having fun! This is a natural point in the year for reflection - classroom community and routines, student progress (academic and behavioral), team and personal goals, etc....While this is the time of the year when we officially reflect on our SLOs, I know that as educators we are continually reflecting on our practices and student progress, refining and growing all the time. My hope for your teams is that you are learning and growing together throughout the year, and I hope that your conversations about the stages of collaborative teams and the team rubric proved meaningful in determining your next steps.

Something that I am noticing when talking with students more this year than in the past is that many of them are aware of their personal learning goals. In one of the class meetings on the 8th, a student suggested that self-discipline would apply when you are reading at a certain level on the chart and want to move to another level...whether you are doing data notebooks or helping students set "visible" learning goals in another way - goals are meaningful - and your kids are talking about them!

This week, the PLC Planning Team will be meeting (Monday afternoon) to plan for our next steps as a building on the PLC journey. I look forward to working with them! We will also be talking at that meeting about midyear data meetings and what those will look like. Stay tuned for more information on those.

Finally, thank you to everyone who encouraged students to attend the literacy night last week, and to those of you who were able to attend and run an activity/help yourselves. It was great to see our families enjoying their night together - and enjoying literacy activities at the same time. Based on the door prize slips, we estimate that we had about 110 students attend with their families!

Enjoy the week with your students...and enjoy the teacher work day on Friday!
