Avoca West News

Week of October 22nd

"Twas the Week of Parent Teacher Conferences!

I hope to see all of our parents out this Wednesday and Thursday for our annual fall parent-teacher conferences. With only two report cards during the year, this is the time for teachers to share observations about what they've learned about your child and to share goals for the future. Likewise, it's the perfect time for you to share input and insights about your child with his/her teacher. "Teamwork makes the dream work," so we hope you know how valued your participation and relationship is to your child's success at Avoca West!

Our Specials teachers (P.E., Music, Spanish, Encore Literacy, Encore Tech, Art, Creative Drama, and Science Lab) will be compiling a one-page flyer for our parents again this year. They are happy to meet with any parens who request a conference, but this news will hopefully help you ask questions about things happening at school.

Our 2nd - 5th graders took the Reading and Math MAP assessments this fall. Parents are welcome to request the report for an individual students, but we do not plan to formally share the reports for this fall period. Having taken the assessment in the second week of school, the fall data simply lets us know 1) Are scores consistent with how they scored in the spring? 2) Where can we look and learn any other insights about students who may need some additional support. Students will take the assessment again in the winter (January) to see whether they are on target for their spring growth score. Those winter reports will be shared in the January report cards for parents.

Parents should have recieved notification already from room parents about the upcoming Halloween Parties next week. Veteran's Day Breakfast at Avoca West - WE NEED YOUR HELP!

This is the first of my years at Avoca West where Veteran's Day does not occur on a school day. We still want to make sure to carry on the tradition of serving those who served our country! Therefore, our Veteran's Day breakfast will take place Monday, November 12th from 8:30-9:30 at Avoca West. Our Student Ambassadors are eager to deck out our school in patriotic theme AND to welcome any and all veterans to serve them breakfast.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! We count on our parents, students, and community members to spread the word! Any AND ALL veterans are welcome -- whether they have a tie to Avoca West or not. Feel free to invite aunts, uncles, neighbors, friends. All are welcome, as we want to make sure that they feel the appreciation from our students.

Remember, this is a DISTRICT EVENT - Marie Murphy participants are always welcome!

Please RSVP to Cece Donoghue or Roxann Giovannini, but feel free to come the day if it just happens to work out! Many thanks!

EMPATHETIC - Bernie's Book Bank Drive

Each year we have our book collection for Bernie's Book Bank to coincide with our Book Fair in the ITC. These books are then donated to the bank so that they are able to gain access to your new or gently used books.

In the winter, our 1st graders spend time at Bernie's Book Bank to learn about community and giving back as a part of their Social Studies unit. It's a wonderful chance for our students to see things go full circle!

The Book Fair will be open to the public during Parent-Teacher Conferences -- Wednesday & Thursday evenings.

Safety Drills -- Time to Practice

As my former softball coach used to say, "Practice doesn't make perfect...Perfect practice makes perfect!" This is why we make sure that during any and all drills at Avoca our students are as buttoned up as possible. We certainly hope to never have to take part in an emergency protocol, but we will continue to keep the conversation going and to give feedback to our students and staff on ways to tighten up.

In the week ahead and during the next, we will practice several drills and safety talks. They are:

  • Monday - October 22nd - Glenview Fire Department visits classrooms. Parent letter and homework to go home with students tomorrow
  • Wednesday - October 24th - Shelter in Place (Tornado) & Evacuation/Fire Drill #2
  • Monday - October 29th - Lockdown Drill (Glenview Fire & Police Departments to join us)
