Draw the Line/Respect the Line program
Currently at Knoxville Middle School, the Life Skills classes will be participating in a program called Draw the Line/Respect the Line led by program facilitator, Alissa Swarts. This is our Health unit and will last for about two weeks. The program helps students learn ways to prevent HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy. The lessons emphasize that choosing not to have sex is the safest choice during this time in their life.
In sixth grade, students will receive 5 lessons. In seventh and eighth grade, the students will receive 7 lessons. The lessons focus on peer pressure and how to resist it. Learning to resist peer pressure is important for many situations. Students will learn and practice ways to resist pressure by role playing. Communication and decision-making skills will also be taught!
The Draw the Line/Respect the Line program includes homework activities to help parents and children talk about personal limits. We hope parents will work with their children on these. This homework is voluntary and students will not share answers in class. During this program, students have a chance to ask questions that might come up and Alissa does a great job of answering those questions.
Overall, this unit is very informative for the students and Alissa does a great job of teaching this unit. We look forward to working with her next year as well!
6th Grade Science
DNA MODELS
Recently, the 6th grade Science classes have been learning about the basics of DNA. The students made DNA models out of red licorice and colored marshmallows. The new Science standards are really pushing for models to explain what we are talking about.
FINGERPRINT SCIENCE
With the talk of DNA, an activity called FINGERPRINT SCIENCE, helped the students learn about fingerprints - how to use flour to make a fingerprint visible and easier to see. They also attempted to use scotch tape to "collect" and save fingerprints. Using paintbrushes gently was not an easy task.
MICROSCOPES
The students were intoduced to stereo microscopes to determine the type of fingerprint on each of their fingers - plain arch, tented arch, ulnar loop, radical loop, plain whorl, central pocket loop, double loop, and accidental whorl.
SOLAR CARS
Each of the sixth graders will be using a kit to make a solar car during the first week in April. The students will get no help from me - at the beginning. It is a frustrating, challenging, and problem solving activity to get the students to THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX to think of possible solutions for each problem they encounter. A big part of the project is to motivate the students ti speak with each other and come up with possible solutions.
ELEMENTARY NEWS
Second Grade: Math Problems & Penguins
Second graders have been working to solve this math word problem. Can you figure it out? Be sure to put a label on your answer.
In the parking lot at Casey's, there are a total of 40 wheels touching the ground. How many vehicles are there, and what kind of vehicles are they?
Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss
West Elementary would like to thank HyVee for helping us celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2nd. Managers Kelly Kayser, Kathy Reece, and Jake Willoughby came to read books written by Dr. Seuss to each kindergarten - second grade classroom. Each class was given five new books for students to enjoy.
