Knox News!
November 2018
Welcome to November!
Hello Knox Families!
During the month of October, we welcomed the Tariq Khamisa Foundation, with an assembly on peace, non-violence and forgiveness. Our 5th grade friends from Nye, Porter, Baker and Chavez all came for a tour of Knox and a special collaboration with our 8th grade AVID students. We hosted a parent workshop on supporting students with Common Core math and math homework, and also had a packed parent circle. Our Knox students have also participated in 3 acting workshops in collaboration with the La Jolla Playhouse, in preparation for our Spring Musical, Annie Jr. We are so thankful to our teachers (Hesse, Stevens, Peretto, and Valadez) for taking on this project.
Our 2 Knox Robotics teams continue to prepare for competition on November 3rd at High Tech High. Mr. Morris has helped to secure donations from multiple sources to support our robotics team.
The Knox ASB, lead by Ms. Hesse, also hosted our first Pep Rally of the year to celebrate Progress Report #1. We were fortunate to be presented with a grant for $5,000 from Barona Education, with support from Assemblywoman Dr. Shirley Weber's office. The $5,000 will be used for library books. Please see Ms. Ullman to add your titles to the list to be ordered.
Our Knox Circle leaders joined Lincoln High circle leaders as they participated in a Saturday training with our Restorative Practices Coordinator, Mr. Ponsford, the Restorative Teams from NCRC, Lincoln and the Restorative Practices Department at the district.
In addition, 60 Knox students attended Sea World's Ocean Link project. We congratulate these 50 students on perfect attendance, and 10 more who have been attending Saturday/Sunday school exhibiting responsible attendance.
This month, all of our Knox students also got to meet Blitz, the SDUSD K9, and learn more about his role in keeping our schools safe.
Many students have been attending math tutoring after school on Tuesdays in S4.
Ms. Lapp has also started a guided reading group on Monday's before school. The students are reading El Deafo. Please reach out to Ms. Lapp if you would like your student to take part in this special opportunity (elapp@sandi.net).
We will be finishing our school-wide read aloud of Out of My Mind before the Thanksgiving Break. Please encourage your student to check out a book from the Knox library.

We encourage all students to read for 20 minutes a night independently. Students can check out books during Advisory or lunch time. Did you know that we have many new books in our school library? Your 7th grade student will be bringing home a copy of A Long Walk to Water, and your 6th grade student will be bringing home their own copy of A Lightening Thief.
All Knox students will have nightly math homework. Homework is assigned from a math packet that is given to the students at the start of each chapter. Math tutoring is EVERY Tuesday in room S4 from 3:10-4:10.
Please check your child's planner nighty. They should be recording their homework assignments there.
Reports Cards were mailed home! Please log into Power School Parent Portal to monitor your child's grades.
Please remind your student to stay on the sidewalk when walking home from school. This is very important for student safety. Also, all students that ride bikes, skateboards, and scooters must have a helmet.
Thank you for all of your support!
Sincerely,
Principal Potter

Our History team is supporting our students with writing! As a team, they are gathering tools that support our students' writing needs based on the baseline data that was gathered across grade levels. The data showed our students need support with transitions, flow and analysis, so we are working on ways to support and strengthen our student's writing.
In addition, 6th grade students just completed building Sumerian carts! Check them out!
