Superintendent's Newsletter
November 2018
From the Desk of Superintendent Dr. John Baker:
Dear RCSD Community,
Thank you for taking the time to remain engaged this fall during our work that we call Planning for Our Future. I know that this has been a very busy, difficult, and sometimes emotional process but I do appreciate your involvement and input. Two things that I knew going in when we started this work last spring--I knew that it would not be easy and I knew that I wanted every parent, staff member, and community member to have opportunities to be engaged and be heard.
Next week, the RCSD Board of Trustees will vote on a resolution that if approved, will transform our school district. A lot of time and work has gone in to help our district remain financially solvent while also focused on our mission of Educating Every Child for Success. Our parents, teachers, and staff members from each school site who make up the Superintendent’s Advisory Council put in many hours studying data to identify ideas to help us tackle our district’s challenges. We took those ideas to you, everyone in our community, and gathered hundreds of pages with your comments and heard several hours of feedback during a series of meetings throughout our district. This work shaped the final recommendations that are coming to the Board on Wednesday evening.
While Redwood City School District has a history of change, if approved, the Board action is change that we haven’t seen in recent years. The last significant change to our schools was adding our Mandarin Immersion program at John Gill. As our enrollment dips, our community shifts, and times change, we, too, must adapt to serve you.
This week, I will be taking some time to thank you--our parents, teachers and staff, and supportive community. I do that every day because our students are successful with your support. However, this Thanksgiving, I will keep in mind that you are also supportive during difficult times. I know that this transition will take some adjustment but in the end, as difficult as this has been, I know that we are building a better RCSD.
Now that the holiday season is upon us, it’s important to keep in mind that every school day matters. As educators, it is our duty and joy to provide your child with the very best education and we can only do that when they are with us every day in the classroom.
We look forward to seeing your child at school next Monday, November 26.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
John Baker
Superintendent
