What's Happening in MI?
December
We have made it to the final stretch of the semester!!
In this final stretch, we are starting our second unit. Our main focus will be on genetics and genetic testing. We start out with fetal genetic testing and prenatal care. The students get to role play the genetic counselling profession on an assigned case file and then act out a doctor/patient consultation. Then we work with molecluar technologies such as PCR and gel electrophoresis to diagnose genetic disorders. Our big lab before break will be the kids testing their own DNA for a genetic marker that allows them to taste the chemical PTC. It's one that is very strong in foods like grapefruit...so your child will know what type of gene they have after we run the tests and then we will confirm with actually tasting the PTC. It's quite an awesome lab.
As far as testing goes, the kids will be getting back their test they took on Friday soon and then they will have a take-home test over genetics the week before finals. Then they have their comprehensive final and that will finish us out for the semester.
As always, let me know if you have any questions,
Mrs. Weiss
