Week of 1.3.16 & 1.10.16

Staff Edition

Mission Statement

Northwood Elementary School will provide higher-level learning opportunities for all students to maximize their potential in a safe, nurturing, respectful, and diverse environment.

Happy New Year!

I hope you enjoyed your time off. It was a wonderful time to recharge and get ready for the rest of the school year! Welcome Back!

Thank you for the bracelet, I appreciate your thoughtfulness. Thanks to the Social Committee for the holiday breakfast!

Reports will be mailed home to parents this week. The reports will have the scores from the test students took last year. The test gives us baseline data that we will look at with our other data as we continue to look for the ways to best support our students in their learning. The information was shared with you prior to break.

The Michigan Attorney General’s office will conduct a presentation on student safety featuring the Michigan Cyber Safety Initiative (CSI) and the student safety hotline, OK2SAY.

The one-hour seminar for adults is being offered at the Northwood Elementary School Cafeteria at 6:30 PM on January 7. Entry will be at the North Entrance #1.

The community seminar provides practical tools including Internet safety tips and how to: 1) access the Michigan Sex Offender Registry; 2) understand the impact of digital footprints; 3) appreciate the risk of sharing photos with embedded location information; 4) recognize the potential dangers and legal ramification of sexting; and 5) identify cyberbullying warning signs and develop a plan of action. This presentation will also cover what the students see in their respective presentations, as well as what OK2SAY is, and how it works.

Handouts used during our presentations, and additional information, can be accessed at the Attorney General's website, More information on OK2SAY, as well as resources, is available at

Gleaners Food Drive

Boxes will be in the Door 3 vestibule. January 11-29. Details to follow from the PTA.
PBIS Matrix/January Lesson Focus

Please focus on "Office/Library" during the month of December. Please REVIEW and PRACTICE all four areas in the OAKS Matrix related to Office/Library behavior. Be prepared to discuss with your colleagues and share lessons.

Safety Note

Please remind students that they must be supervised by their parent or guardian if they remain on the playground before or after school. Please note that students are not allowed to climb the fence or backstop at any time. I will remind parents. Thank you.

You may have noticed that the exterior doors are being renumbered. Numbering all doors will allow us to communicate all exterior door locations. Previously only the entry/pick-up doors were numbered. Eventually the old numbers will be removed.

Please check the Assessment Calendar and make sure you know what you need for 2MP.

Thank you.
