If it is necessary for a student to leave campus, they must obtain a permit to leave from the attendance office. A parent or guardian must call the attendance office prior to the student needing to leave. Notes will not be accepted. Please be advised that NO PERMITS TO LEAVE CAMPUS WILL BE MADE AND NO STUDENT WILL BE CALLED OUT OF CLASS 20 MINUTES BEFORE LUNCH AND 20 MINUTES BEFORE THE END OF THE DAY.
STUDENT DROP OFF

Parking Permits
- Students, we have a limited number of student parking spaces. If you are a Jr or Sr and need a parking permit, please fill out the application and pay so that you receive one. Don't delay or you may not get one. Sophomore and Freshman students will not be able to get one until after Sept 23rd. If you park on campus without a permit, you will receive a ticket and could be towed. If you have questions, please see Mrs. Mortenson

Did you move? Are you moving?
- If your student will not be attending Centennial this year, please make sure that you contact the registrar at nimmo.julie@westada.org to withdraw your student. Parents must sign a withdraw form with Centennial High to be withdrawn. If you are moving at a later date, you can still get the withdraw process started. It will help to get your student's correct grades into PowerSchool before the withdraw date. We want the students' transition to their new school to be smooth. Please return the laptop/charger, books, ID Badge, Parking Permit, pay monies due, and any other items to our bookkeeper at Centennial to avoid charges.
- Would your family benefit from a FREE, complete turkey dinner for the December holiday break? Let the CHS Pantry provide for you! Please contact Amy Cornell, cornell.amy@westada.org, or Nikki Madsen, madsen.nicole@westada.org, and we will add you to our list!
SPONSOR A FAMILY FOR DECEMBER TURKEY DINNER!
If you, your family, your church group, your book club, your team, or whichever group you belong to, are interested in sponsoring a family for December turkey dinner, please bring donations to Diane Steinmetz. A $100 donation will sponsor a family for a full turkey dinner, a bottle of cider, and an additional gift card. Any and all donations are happily accepted, even if it's only a partial sponsorship.
If you would like to be acknowledged as a sponsor and/or if you have any questions, please email Amy Owens Cornell at cornell.amy@westada.org
Upcoming PSAT: News for parents and students
Taking the PSAT (10th and 11th grade) and the SAT (11th grade) is no longer a graduation requirement and is now OPTIONAL. Your school will still provide a free PSAT test day for 10th graders and a free SAT test day for 11th graders. If you are a junior wanting to take the PSAT for National Merit qualification, you will need to pay for the PSAT out of pocket ($22).
SAT (11th graders) – Wednesday April 12th, 2023
We are asking that ALL parents please complete the “College Exam Opt-In form and indicate whether you want your child taking the college entrance exam or not. To take each of these tests for free (PSAT 10th graders, SAT 11th graders) you will need to log into your parent power school and complete the “College Exam Opt-In Form”. SENIORS
Transcripts and Test-Optional Status
With more and more colleges going test-optional, you may want to consider having your SAT score removed from your transcript (it is currently included automatically). Things to consider:
- You have decided to apply to a college as "test-optional" and do NOT want your score considered (when your score is lower than the median for that college) - you may want it removed from your transcript
- You may want your score to stay on your transcript, if it is higher than the median for the college
- Some financial aid opportunities are tied to test scores at some colleges, even if they are not used for admission
- This is a one-time option...once you have opted out, you cannot opt back in
- If you opt out, any schools/financial aid opportunities that request a copy of your scores will require you to request them directly from Collegeboard (usually for a fee...unofficial copies can be downloaded for free and are suitable for some purposes)
If you decide that you'd like your test scores removed from your transcript, please complete the attached Opt-Out Form and return it to Kristen Swafford in the Career Center (hard copy or scan to email: swafford.kristen@westada.org).
Seniors WITHOUT a Government Class!
For those seniors who have already taken Government (or who are taking it online), please contact Ms. Swafford in the Career Center to get access to information about the future-planning process. With enough interest, an additional session of the presentation will be offered!
We are also holding College Application Week during Government classes from October 14-October 17. This is a time where we'll walk you through the application process of applying to college (including actually submitting Idaho college applications!), help you get started on scholarships, and other financial aid info. If you have a free period you could come in, let Ms. Swafford know and we'll get you the information for a class you can join to participate!
Email for presentation info and/or college application week participation: swafford.kristen@westada.org
- Merit Scholarships: free money for college, does not need to be repaid, usually given by individual colleges/universities
- Academic (grades - usually different levels for GPA)
- Athletic (skill on field - not as common as many wish for!)
- Abilities/talents (music, theater, etc.)
- Grants: free money for college, does not need to be repaid, almost always need-based
- Pell Grant - federal government grant, students qualify based on FAFSA EFC
- School-specific grants - some colleges will supplement the Pell Grant with their own need-based funding
- Loans: money for college that must be repaid, with interest
- Most students will need some form of loans for education after high school - FAFSA is the place to start!
- Pro tip - take ONLY the amount you need in loans...try to keep it to no more than the Stafford Loans provided through FAFSA for the most reasonable repayment options in future
- FAFSA: "Free Application for Federal Student Aid"
- Starting point for all financial aid
- Opens October 1 of your senior year
- Good idea to apply for FAFSA before the end of 2022, if possible
- Available to all students with a social security number (even if parents do not have a SSN)
- We'll hold FAFSA completion nights in October to help families who want assistance...details to come!
So, how to go about the scholarship/financial aid search?
- CHS College & Career Website - options for scholarship search websites and a list of scholarships that come our way (still in progress of being updated!)
- College financial aid websites - once you have your college list narrowed, check these places:
- College-specific financial aid applications (if applicable)
- College-specific scholarship database for admitted students (some colleges)
- Program/department-specific scholarships for students (some programs)
- Treat the scholarship search like a part-time job, and keep these notes in mind:
- You should NEVER pay to apply for a scholarship...if a scholarship app asks for a fee, it's probably a scam
- There is a lot of money available out there, but accessing it takes a lot of work!
- The easier the application, the more students will apply and the lower your chances
- The more intensive the application, the fewer students will apply and your chances improve
- The more time/effort you put into the search, the better your results will likely be
- Pro tip: schedule a set amount of time to work on scholarship apps each week!
- For underclassmen:
- Start the search early...even if you can't apply for a specific scholarship until your senior year, you can start compiling a list of those scholarships that would be a good fit for you now! The application requirements, deadlines, and applicant criteria remain the same year-to-year 99% of the time.
I can be reached at swafford.kristen@westada.org if you have follow-up questions or I can assist with this further!
