Welcome Dr. Jaime Aquino, our new SAISD Superintendent
We are excited to welcome our new superintendent, Dr. Jaime Aquino!
Excerpted from the SAISD website: Dr. Aquino was born and raised in the Dominican Republic and is deeply committed to ensuring that all children have access to an excellent education. Having begun his career as a bilingual teacher over 30 years ago in Queens, New York, he has deep experience as a leader in diverse, urban school districts and a record of achieving academic success with children just like ours. Dr. Aquino also brings with him a deep appreciation for our multicultural community and the importance of building close relationships with families.
As we look forward to our future, we also want to take a moment to thank Dr. Robert Jaklich, also known as "Dr. J," for stepping out of retirement to serve as our interim superintendent. Our Board of Trustees has been so fortunate to work with him these last eight months. He has worked tirelessly, shoulder-to-shoulder with our teachers and leaders to meet the demands of this difficult time. We know he will be missed. The kind of leadership he has exemplified is that kind that leaves a lasting impression upon all of us, and we are all better for it.
SAISD SMART Summer Camp!
Extended School Year
Extended School Year (ESY) is a program available to students with disabilities that take more than a "reasonable amount of time" after a break to recover the skills they are working on in their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Campus staff collect data throughout the school year to determine whether a recommendation for ESY is needed for your child.
Unlike traditional summer school where students have opportunities to learn new skills, students who participate in ESY work on the skills in their IEP they need to maintain during the break from instruction.
For more information about ESY, contact director Casie Bland or coordinator Danny Ditto

April is National Poetry Month.
National Poetry Month, a celebration of poetry which takes place each April, was introduced in 1996 and is organized by the Academy of American Poets as a way to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States. The Academy of American Poets' website, Poets.org, serves as a hub for information about local poetry events during the month. The organization also provides free educational resources to teachers for classroom celebrations and activities, and commissions an annual festival poster.
Brittny Chism Special Education Teacher Herman Hirsch Elementary
Hi! My name is Ms. Chism and I am so excited and honored to be Hirsch's Teacher of the Year!
This will be my 7th year as a Special Education Teacher. I have always wanted to be a teacher but discovered a strong passion for Special Education during my Special Education Courses in college at the University of the Incarnate Word. I absolutely love my job so much. I love to make learning fun! Our school days are filled with lots of learning, lots of love, and new adventures. I was born and raised in Texas and currently live at home with my son, one dog, 2 cats, and 4 chickens. I have 1 sister and 1 brother. I am looking so forward to finishing the school year strong with the most amazing kids who are in my class!
Ms. Tillie Sanchez, GEC teacher at Poe Middle School
I am in my tenth year of being a GEC teacher at Poe Middle School. I graduated from Highlands High School and received my degree from Our Lady of the Lake University. I began my career with SAISD as an Instructional Assistant in the BAC unit at Pickett Academy. While completing my degree I was a substitute teacher at Jefferson High School. The completion of my degree and my work with the students I serve is all dedicated to the memory of my daughter- Mia who continues to push me to be stronger and give from the heart. I am proud to work and serve the students at Poe Middle School since it is the community where I grew up. I am beyond proud to serve at a school at which my parents and siblings attended.
