Hershey's Chocolate

Created by Milton Hershey in 1900

The very beginning....

Milton S. Hershey origanally had a successful caramel company after two unsuccessful companies. Later on, he become fascinated with the art of chocolate making while he was at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. While there, he purchased some German machinery, had it shipped to Lancaster and began making chocolate coatings for his caramels. Soon after, he started the Hershey Chocolate Company because of the growing demand for chocolate and worked for many years to perfect his recipe. Once the Hershey's company became successful, he sold his caramel company for $1 million. What had once been a luxury for the rich was to become an enjoyment that anyone could afford - the Hershey bar.

Milton Hershey School

The Milton Hershey School was founded in 1909 as a school for orphan boys after the Hershey's chocolate company became very successful and they wanted to put the profits to good use.

Following the death of his wife, Mr. Hershey donated virtually his entire personal fortune to The Hershey Trust Company to run the Milton Hershey School. Today, MILTON HERSHEY SCHOOL is a coeducational home and school that remains focused on helping children. The school provides a free world-class education, as well as meals, clothing, a nurturing home, health care, counseling and career training, to almost 2,000 underprivileged children. Therefore this school depends on the company’s continued success.

The Hershey Company is proud to help the school continue to grow, not only by building our business but through direct partnerships with students and houseparents. Various departments and plants host career days and tours, and many MILTON HERSHEY SCHOOL students work in internships at the Hershey Company. Through our "Project Fellowship" program, groups of employees pair up with student homes for mutually fulfilling and fun ongoing relationships. Project Fellowship involves employees from our U.S. and international locations at many levels, bringing a global experience and strong role models to MILTON HERSHEY SCHOOL students.
