Boise High Insights!
2nd Quarter
From the desk of our Principal - Robb Thompson!
Hello Boise Braves –
I hope this finds you doing well. It is difficult to believe that we are already quickly approaching the winter holiday break, which begins with an early release on Thursday, December 21st. This is a busy time of year in our campus lives, with a multitude of concerts, productions, athletic events and school projects. I am always reminded, during this time of year, how talented and hard working our students and faculty truly are. One such reminder of this is the annual Boise High Rotunda Concert, a long standing Boise High holiday tradition. This year’s concert will take place on Wednesday, December 20th at 6:30 p.m. in the Capitol Rotunda. If you’ve never attended this concert, I hope you have the opportunity this year. The Boise High School Choir and Orchestra have put together a combined program that is second to none. Thanks to all who have supported our Braves by attending some of the many events that are currently taking place.
Shortly after the Winter Holiday Break, we will complete the first semester of the school year, with final exams taking place the week of January 15th. The completion of the first semester always indicates the time to begin preparation for next school year. One event that will be here before we know it is our Sophomore Open House, which we do in preparation for next school year’s 10th grade class. This year’s Open House will take place on Tuesday, January 30th at 6:30 p.m., so please mark your calendars accordingly if this is applicable to you.
Construction of the Boise High Athletic Complex, located at Fort Street and Robbins Road is progressing nicely and should be ready for the start of the Fall Athletics Season next school year. The athletic complex will contain two soccer fields, a softball field, a sub-varsity football field, and a field house complete with team rooms, restrooms, and a concession stand. (see picture below)
The historic remodel of the 1936 gym and construction of the new Performing Arts Center are also well underway and on-track from completion by November of 2018. Thank you again to all who supported the Boise School District School Bond Election last March, which has provided this great opportunity for Boise High School.
Our Brave Parent Board just awarded $16,000 in grants to help fund various programs throughout Boise High School. A big thank you to our Brave Parent Organization for all they do to support the many wonderful things taking place in classrooms, through activities and within our athletics programs. We are all incredibly grateful!
I hope you find this newsletter helpful. It is our goal to keep you informed regarding the many wonderful things taking place in our classrooms and community at Boise High School. I wish each of you a joyous holiday season with health and happiness for 2018. Thank you for your continued support of Boise High School. I look forward to seeing you at school or one of the many athletic and activity events in the coming weeks.
Warmly –
Robb Thompson

Description of Commended Scholar
The National Merit Scholarship Program is a United States academic scholarship competition for recognition and university scholarships administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), a privately funded, not-for-profit organization based in Evanston, Illinois. The program began in 1955.
NMSC conducts two annual competitions for recognition and scholarships. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score, which may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semi-finalists in their respective states.
National Merit Scholarship Overview. Approximately 1.5 million high school students take the PSAT each year. Of those, 50,000 (3.3%) are Commended Scholars, and 16,000 (1.1%) are chosen as National Merit Scholar Semifinalists.

Description of Scholarship
The College Board’s NHRP program is an academic honor that can be included on college applications. It’s not a scholarship, but colleges do use this program to identify academically exceptional Hispanic/Latino students.
To be eligible, students must be at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino. Hispanic/Latino is an ethnic category, not a racial category, so they can be of any race.
Students must have ancestors from at least one of these countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay, or Venezuela.

The ACT Composite Score
In college admissions, the ACT Composite Score is by far the most important score.
The ACT has 4 core sections (English, Math, Reading, and Science), with 1 optional section (Writing). Each of the 4 sections has a score that ranges from 1 (lowest) to 36 (highest). The Writing score is a separate score, ranging from 2 (lowest) to 12 (highest).
The Composite Score is an average (the arithmetic mean) of the 4 core section scores.

Important information about Student Accounts!
Important Information from Boise High Regarding Student Accounts:
Due to district cybersecurity policies, it is imperative that students change their Google single sign on identity password as soon as possible.
Students can access the password reset link by visiting Boise High’s Library Homepage and clicking on the link for the Google Single Sign On Password Reset (https://myaccount.boiseschools.org/home.html?0). Select “Register/Update My Account.” Then, follow the prompts for security question and password resets.
Please be aware that changing the password with this link will change the password for Active Directory, all Google accounts (gmail, drive, docs), AND Infinite Campus.
If students have any questions or need assistance, they should see Mrs. Rush in the library.

Turtles All The Way Down - by John Green
“Astonishing…. So surprising and moving and true that I became completely unstrung.” – The New York Times
Sixteen-year-old Aza never intended to pursue the mystery of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there’s a hundred-thousand-dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Russell Pickett’s son, Davis.
In his long-awaited return, John Green, the acclaimed, award-winning author of Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars, shares Aza’s story with shattering, unflinching clarity in this brilliant novel of love, resilience, and the power of lifelong friendship.
How Dare The Sun Rise - by Sandra Uwiringiyimana
This profoundly moving memoir is the remarkable and inspiring true story of Sandra Uwiringiyimana, a girl from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who tells the tale of how she survived a massacre, immigrated to America, and overcame her trauma through art and activism.
Sandra was just ten years old when she found herself with a gun pointed at her head. She had watched as rebels gunned down her mother and six-year-old sister in a refugee camp. Remarkably, the rebel didn’t pull the trigger, and Sandra escaped.
Thus began a new life for her and her surviving family members. With no home and no money, they struggled to stay alive. Eventually, through a United Nations refugee program, they moved to America, only to face yet another ethnic disconnect. Sandra may have crossed an ocean, but there was now a much wider divide she had to overcome.
The Book Of Dust - by La Belle Sauvage
"Too few things in our world are worth a seventeen year wait: The Book of Dust is one of them." —The Washington Post
Malcolm Polstead is the kind of boy who notices everything but is not much noticed himself. And so perhaps it was inevitable that he would become a spy....
Malcolm's parents run an inn called the Trout, on the banks of the river Thames, and all of Oxford passes through its doors. Malcolm and his daemon, Asta, routinely overhear news and gossip, and the occasional scandal, but during a winter of unceasing rain, Malcolm catches wind of something new: intrigue.

From the Desk of our Athletic Director!
The Athletic Department hopes you all had a wonderful Holiday Season and looks forward to 2018. We are having much success in our athletic endeavors this winter. The Lady Braves basketball team is doing well and is 4-3 at this time with a 2-1 record in conference. The Braves basketball team has started off strong as well and is currently 3-0 with some big games coming up soon.
The Wrestling team has some solid numbers and just competed at the Bucks Bags Invitational last weekend. Their first home match is Monday, December 4th. The Hockey team is also competing very well and is currently in 1st place with a 8-1 record. We are currently doing some raffles for food, tires, hockey tickets and hotel accommodations this season and will continue these until the end of the season, so remember to pick up some raffle tickets at the games! Also, if you need some stocking stuffers we are selling items at the games as well. Don’t forget to check the website for updated games and schedules. GO BRAVES!!!

From our Athletic Trainer!
(Golf, Track & Field, Softball, Baseball and Tennis)
Before participating in any practice or game, student-athletes must complete the necessary documents required by the Boise School District and the Idaho High School Activities Association. In an effort to reduce the amount of paperwork and go green, the Boise School District has moved to an online electronic version of the required paperwork. The program used by all Athletic Departments is called CSMi SportsWare.
If you are brand new to this process, instructions can be found here:
http://boise.boiseschools.org/common/pages/DisplayFile.aspx?itemId=26901143
If you completed this online process for your child last year, then you will need to renew the information this year. You can use the same username (email) and password you used before. If you don't remember your password, you can reset it yourself by following the instructions onwww.swol123.net. If you already completed the information for your child this year for a fall sport, you do not need to redo it.
As always, please don't hesitate to ask questions! nikki.clark@boiseschools.org
