VDH will be hosting (Pfizer) vaccine clinics
The VDH will be hosting (Pfizer) vaccine clinics in the coming weeks at school sites, scheduled as follows:
Broadway High School (June 1): 12:30p-1:30p
J. Frank Hillyard Middle School (June 1): 2:30p-3:30p
East Rockingham High School (June 4): 9:30a-10:30a
Elkton Middle School (June 4): 11:30a-12:30p
Spotswood High School (June 4): 12:30p-1:30p
Montevideo Middle School (June 4): 2:30p-3:30p
Turner Ashby High School (June 7): 12:30p-1:30p
Wilbur S. Pence Middle School (June 7): 2:30p-3:30p
Both the first and second doses can be administered at this time for anyone (staff, students, parents, guardians, and family members of students) age 12 and older. Persons under the age of 18 will need the front of their consent form filled out by a parent/guardian prior to arrival on site. Anyone 18+ can fill out forms on site.
For WSPMS students, this means that they can receive the vaccine at WSPMS on Monday, June 7, 2021, with the front of the signed consent form (attached) completed without a parent/guardian present. If a student receives the vaccine at another school site, a parent/guardian must be present with the child to receive the vaccine.
The second dose for this clinic will be on June 24th at the Harrisonburg Community Activities Center.
The VDH will need to have an idea of how many doses of the vaccine are needed at this clinic. A link to a Google Form is provided below. The form needs to be completed and submitted for each individual who will be receiving the vaccine at Wilbur S. Pence Middle School on June 7, 2021. You DO NOT need to submit the form if you/your student will not be receiving the vaccine. If you are unable to access the form, please call the school (879-2535).

End of Year Celebration Activities
Each grade level has lots of fun indoor and outdoor activities planned throughout the day. Social learning is certainly just as big of a part of school as the academics. We look forward to a fun day with the students.
If it looks like the weather will not be cooperating that day, we will try to plan ahead and hold the activities on Tuesday, June 8th.

TA Golf Information
May 24, 2021
Dear Prospective Golfer,
As a rising 8th or 9th grader, you are eligible to compete for a spot on the Turner Ashby golf team. 8th graders are eligible for junior varsity competition; 9th graders are eligible for varsity and junior varsity events.
Tryouts will be held the first few days of practice in late July and early August. You will play a few rounds of golf and spend some time on the practice range and putting green during those days. A few spots on the team will be reserved for junior varsity golfers. Therefore, while you will be practicing with juniors and seniors, you will not be competing against them for a spot on the team. Some of our varsity golfers usually shoot rounds in the 70s and 80s, but 8th and 9th graders that show the potential and work ethic to improve are not expected to be able to score as well as the varsity players in order to make the junior varsity team.
Lakeview Golf Course allows us to play free of charge during matches and official team practices. You must provide your own transportation to the golf course.
Practices begin July 29, 2021. Please plan summer activities knowing that you need to be available by the end of July. Matches begin in early August, so it is important that players show up in good form when the season begins. The season continues through mid-September with players that advance to Regionals competing in early October.
A high school golf program provides the opportunity to compete; it is not designed to teach you how to play the game. Players are expected to be talented and knowledgeable enough to compete in tournaments without constant supervision.
If you are interested in playing golf at Turner Ashby in the fall of 2021, please contact Coach Hutchinson (chutchinson@rockingham.k12.va.us) to indicate your interest. Make sure that you have a valid physical turned in to the TA office by mid-July. Physicals completed after May 1, 2021 are valid for the 2021-22 school year for all sports. There is an opportunity to get your physical done for only $20 on June 3 from 4-6:00 p.m. at the Sentara Ortho building if you are interested.
Sincerely,
Corey Hutchinson

Things to Do During the Summer:
Play as much as you can. Find friends that also like to play that will encourage you to work on your game, push you to get better, and keep it fun. Become familiar with as many local courses on our high school schedule as possible--
Likely JV match courses...
TA plays at Lakeview
HHS plays at Heritage Oaks
BHS plays at Shenvalee
SHS will play at Woodstone Meadows (Massanutten) for 2021
Other courses that will be on our varsity schedule during most years…
RCHS plays at Lexington CC
ERHS plays at Woodstone Meadows
FDHS plays at Ironwood CC
Get used to competition. Put yourself in tournament settings as much as possible. For those interested in junior golf tournaments there are many options, including some entry-level/low pressure events.
For those that are relatively new to competition or would prefer a local, low-pressure setting:
Tropical Smoothie Junior Golf Tour: This could be the ideal setting for someone who is looking for a low-cost, no commitment situation. You don’t have to pay any type of initiation fee to join, and each event is only $20. It is run by the First Tee program. Very well run for both the beginner and more advanced player. (https://firstteeshenandoahvalley.org)
Lakeview Junior Golf Tour: While this program requires a small fee to join initially, it is also a very good setting for a more entry-level player or someone who prefers a low-pressure situation. (https://rogersgolf.net/junior-resource-center/)
For those interested in a more competitive setting:
First Citizens Junior Golf Tour (fcjgt.net): This tour offers the potential for some higher-level competition and offers tournaments at a lot of very nice courses in our part of the Valley and in the Charlottesville area.
Stay in good shape: Golf requires a lot more physical conditioning than most people realize. Riding in a cart occasionally is OK, but don’t get too used to it. You need to be used to walking golf courses and carrying/pushing your own bag. Make sure your body is ready for quite a few hours each day in the early August heat.
Instruction: For those interesting in personalized or group lessons/instructions, there are a variety of local options:
First Tee of the Shenandoah Valley--they have many programs to suit different levels of ability (https://firstteeshenandoahvalley.org)
John Rogers at Lakeview Golf Course is an excellent teacher and also coaches local college players (https://rogersgolf.net)
Wendy Kern and Nancy White at Mulligan’s Golf Center have worked with some of the best high school and college players in the area (http://www.mulligans-golf.com/lessons/)

Immunizations
NEW guidelines
- Please read carefully the RCPS immunization/Physical Examination Schedule for 2021-2022. Under sections Grade 6th and Grade 7th, ALL rising 7th graders will need to have their Tdap-booster (must be 11 years old) that is required for entry into 7th grade regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-containing vaccine by this fall 2021-22 school year.
- They now also require all males and females to get their first dose of HPV and Meningococcal vaccine before entry of the 7th grade as well. We would like for you to start planning ahead on this and get your doctor's appointment scheduled now so this will be done prior to Augusta 2021.
If you have any questions please call and speak to the school nurse or ask your doctor.
