Math-
MCAS is done! The students seemed to try hard on the test, and there were no problems with the technology. I have decided to end the year working on an 8th grade topic on equations. This section can be difficult, but the students have been working hard to understand the material. There will be a few videos they can use to review the material, but this section should help as they transition to 8th grade. There will be 2 different math classes next year. One class will be an 8th grade class math class taught by Ms. Weeks that will be very similar to my class this year in work and difficulty. Every 8th grader will take this class with Ms. Weeks. The other class will be an advanced math course that will be taught during H block. There was a placement exam earlier this year, and the notification of who made it in the class will happen sometime before school ends. This extra math class will include homework and tests and will count as a grade rather than the other Pass/Fail courses offered during H block. This class offers students to take geometry as freshman with the intention of offering them AP Calculus BC as seniors. You will be able to opt out of this class when the notifications come out.
English-
MCAS 2.0 is over! The kids did a great job and gave it their best effort!
We will be continuing down the mighty Mississippi River in the novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer! The students will take their final exam on the novel and hand in their “Tom” essay soon. Please check Google Classroom for dates. There will be a short in- class project before we pack the novel away.
For the rest of June, we will be touching upon different myths in literature. We will primarily be focusing on Greek Mythology. It will be a fun way to round out the year.
Please keep checking Google Classroom for updates and homework!
Reading-
We are almost finished with the Anne Frank Unit. Along with two vocabulary quizzes which included short answer questions, students will complete an Anne Frank project. They will be able to choose between four different assignments. Students may work in a small group, with a partner, or individually. The assignment options are on Google Classroom.
Looking ahead, we will collect background information on our summer reading book, “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton. We will use an online version in class. Students should obtain a copy of the book to use over the summer.
Questions and instructions pertaining to summer reading will be put on the district website. It is our goal to make sure everyone is in good shape with summer reading prior to leaving on June 16th. Look at Google Classroom for any updates and announcements.
Summer is coming. (Insert smiley face here.)
Social Studies-
May has been filled with Ancient Rome. We took a trip back in time and recreated the civilizations and had to get water to the people to advance. Rome was superior as other civilizations did not have the resources and ability to create aqueducts. It was fun for all! We read a version of William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. We made roman roads and each student helped with construction, it was successful! We learned about the city of Pompeii, Gladiators in Roman Culture and focused our attention on Roman Technology and how it advanced society. We are working on the term project that will be due in June. Students should have filled out a project approval form and have all the requirements completed by the due date. Projects are due the 6th for ABC blocks and the 7th for E & F. All the information for the project are posted on Google Classroom. I can’t wait to see what the students have created! We will finish the year off on a great note and students will be ready for 8th grade!
Science-
Throughout the month of May, we are learning about energy. We experimented with kinetic and potential energy with roller coasters. The students each designed their own through coaster creator which is apart of the Jason Project. After they made a successful coaster, they drew out their coaster and labeled where the most and least kinetic and potential energy is located for each hill and loop. As we head into June, we are learning about different forms of energy specifically thermal energy. We are going to be focusing on how heat is transferred and how we can relate that to everyday life.
