Southview P.S. Weekly Update
Week of September 17, 2018
School Enrolment & Reorganization
At this time of year, all schools work with the Limestone District School Board Staffing Committee to ensure that the number of students and class organizations across the District meet the requirements to provide the best learning environment possible for all of our students. Each spring, schools are granted a number of staff based on projected enrollment and in the first week of September, the numbers are re-examined to see if the projected number of students is close to the actual number. This year, Southview has more students than we were projected to have; 606 students in total. This means that we were required to re-organize our school and create an additional classroom. In order to ensure that our school organization meets the Ministry of Education guidelines, it was necessary to move some students to other classrooms. Our staff worked very hard in the spring to create class lists while considering a number of factors and took these factors into account again as we prepared new class lists.
Families who have children moving to a new class have already been notified and are aware of these changes. If you have not heard from us, then your children are remaining in their current class placement.
It is never easy to make these changes once the school year has started, however, adding a new classroom to our organization will allow for smaller class sizes, optimizing the teaching-learning environment. As students start in their new classrooms on Monday, September 17th, we will work together to ensure a smooth transition for all, while continuing to provide rich learning experiences in warm, inviting classrooms.
Toonies for Terry
It’s time to gear up for our annual Toonies for Terry campaign! On Thursday, September 27th all staff and students will be walking around the large sports field at the back of the school to raise awareness about cancer and to honour the memory of Terry Fox and his amazing accomplishments. Our school goal this year is to raise $3500. Any donation amount is greatly appreciated and donations of $20.00 or more (with full donor name and address) will receive a receipt. Cheques and cash are both accepted, with cheques being made payable to The Terry Fox Foundation. Pledge forms have already bee sent home and are due back by Wednesday, September 26th. You can also donate online by clicking the link below. We thank you in advance for your support of this important campaign.
