JSD Year 1 Newsletter
Week Ending Friday 8th November 2013
What have we done this week?
This week the children were introduced to our new 'Power of Reading' book. The book we are looking at this half term is 'The Emperor's Egg'. It is a fact-based book and we will be learning all about penguins and Antarctica. This links in with our 'Keeping Warm' topic this half term.
We looked at some images from Antarctica and the children worked in groups to come up with words and phrases to describe the pictures.
In handwriting the children formed the letters o, f and p. They practised writing short words with those letters in them and concentrated on correct formation and letter size.
Numeracy this week centred around time. We focused on the passing of time which involved days of the week, months and seasons. The children learnt a few songs to help them remember the days in order, maybe they could sing them for you at home. We also thought about what the weather is like in spring, summer, autumn and winter.
We completed our clay pots by painting and decorating them and they look fantastic!
We have started work on our winter display. The children have begun creating a collage picture of an Antarctica scene which they will add some penguins to. The made the background by using ripped paper to create the different effects. Look out for the display soon in the Year One corridor.
We started our new topic 'We are treasure hunters'. The children had to give directions to find a point on a map. We used the language: forwards, backwards, left and right. We will be developing this over the half term and the children will be working towards using programmable toys.
In Science we read 'The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark'. The children talked about their own experiences of night-time and being in the dark.
Fine Motor Skills
We had some table top activities set up to develop our fine motor skills. The children used play-dough to create a detailed model of a tree with individual leaves. We also had a cutting station where the children tried to cut equal sized pieces of card and paper from long strips.
To help with our topic work we are collecting recycled materials over the next few weeks. If you have any clean boxes (no bigger than a cereal box), tubes (not toilet rolls), egg boxes, bottle tops etc could you please send them in.
Year One Open Morning
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for attending the 'Open Morning' this week. The children were very excited about sharing their school experince with their parents. We hope you found it useful and you were able to see just how much work your children have done in such a short time.
We hope you have a great weekend.
