Treatment of strep throat

What it is
Strep throat is a contagious disease caused by infection with streptococcal bacteria, which causes inflammation and swelling of the mucous membranes lining the back of the throat and the tonsils.

Before, the mouth is clean and healthy and after the throat is red and swollen.

What it looks like
Treatment
- Penicillin. This drug may be given by injection in some cases — such as if you have a young child who is having a hard time swallowing or is vomiting.
- Amoxicillin.This drug is in the same family as penicillin, but is often a preferred option for children because it tastes better and is available as a chewable tablet.
