Learning Commons

Hollenbeck Middle School, January 6, 2016

New POLICY

Beginning, January, 2016, all YOUNG ADULT fiction titles in the HMS Learning Commons will include an orange YA (young adult) sticker next to the bar code on the back of the book. This sticker indicates that the title may have "mature content" and students may want to choose another title and/or check with their parents before reading. YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) of the American Library Association defines a "young adult" as someone between the ages of twelve and eighteen.

Graphic novels are here!

"Graphic Novel" is a format, not a genre. Graphic novels can be fiction, non-fiction, history, fantasy, or anything in-between. Graphic novels are similar to comic books because they use sequential art to tell a story. Unlike comic books, graphic novels are generally stand-alone stories with more complex plots. (www.getgraphic.org/whatisagraphicnovel.php) . The HMS Graphic Novel collection is small but will grow quickly. Look for the Graphic Novel section on the purple shelves inside the 6th grade entrance to the Learning Commons.

Where did it go?

Some genre sections have been relocated. "Romance" and "Sports" are now located next to the green "Science" section. "Dystopian" titles (blue tape) are next to the "Realistic" section and the Mark Twain Nominees have been moved to the short shelves next to "Dystopian."

Biographies have been organized into the following sub-sections:

  • Sports
  • Entertainment (celebrities, pop culture, movies, music)
  • Influential leaders in science, politics, business, etc.)
  • Memoirs (journals, diaries, stories of survival & war)
