SEAC Meetings / Contact Your Rep

TVDSB and LCDSB hold meetings throughout the year to receive community input on the development and implementation of special education plans and policies. ABC Ontario is the only recognized group that sits on the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC), required by all school boards, to represent the needs of gifted learners. Below are the upcoming public meeting dates and times as well as the contact information for the SEAC representative in each board. Please contact them if you have any questions or concerns about your school-aged child's needs.

Your child does not need to have been already identified as gifted in order for you to get advice and support.

Tuesday, October 11 @12:15-3, Elgin Room, TVDSB Education Centre

Monday, November 7 @ 6:30-8:30, London Room, TVDSB Education Centre

PARENTS WANTED!

We want you to join our Events Planning Committee to help dream up and plan stimulating and fun opportunities for ABC kids and their families. The committee will host its first meeting in November. Please let us know if you are interested in planning some fun by RSVPing below. We'll find a meeting time that suits those interested.

We are looking for ABC London parents to represent the needs of gifted children in TVDSB and LCDSB. Parents do not need to have children attending school in either district, only have an interest in seeing the needs of bright and gifted children of all ages met within the educational system. Each school board already as one representative, so any volunteers would be integrated into a team and be fully supported as they learned their role. For more information about the role, which would be served on the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC), you can click the link and also email abclondon@abcontario.ca for more information.

FINDING PEERS MADE EASY! - ABC LONDON EVENTS

The purpose of ABC London groups, events, and classes is to bring like-minded children together to learn and socialize, giving them opportunities they might not otherwise have in their daily life. Please click here to read more about the fun we have planned for this fall and to register.

This fall, we are pleased to be able to offer classes for children ages 5-13! No previous experience is necessary and no special skill set is required. Children only need to have a desire to meet other kids "like them".

Check out our events page for information about art classes, First Lego League Junior, hiking, and more. We will be adding more events in the coming weeks for both parents and kids, so check back often and check our Facebook page for updates.

Guided Nature Hike

Sunday, Oct. 16th, 2pm

Medway Valley Heritage Forest, London, ON, Canada

London, ON

Join Hayden Bildy, noted young birder and naturalist, on an exploration of the Medway Valley Heritage Forest. Hayden will spend some time explaining birding basics before leading a nature hike through this Environmentally Significant Area to look for fall migratory birds as well as year-round species of birds and other creatures. Bring binoculars, if you have any.

This educational opportunity is appropriate for children ages 6 and up with a parent. Visit abclondon.ca to reserve your space. There is no cost for this event. ABC suggests a goodwill donation of $2.

ABC London Parent Meeting

Saturday, Oct. 29th, 3:30-4:30pm

3200 Wonderland Road South

London, ON

Join ABC parents to discuss parenting your bright or gifted child on October 29. By this time, you will likely have received your child's IEP (Individual Education Plan) if he or she has been formally identified as gifted. ABC London invites you to bring your child's IEP with you to receive guidance and support before signing this document and returning it to the school.

We encourage all parents to share your experiences and learn from other parents living your reality. The focus of this meeting will be on fall transitions and meeting the social, emotional, and academic needs of your child.

Register for this free event at abclondon.ca.

Next parent meeting: Saturday, December 3 @ 3:30

Recommended Reading

In each newsletter, we like to include something that we have read that we think is valuable enough to pass along to all parents of ABC London. You can search past newsletters here, or see what we post regularly on Facebook here.

In this newsletter, we'd like to offer you the work of a phenomenal organization. Called Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted (SENG), its mission is "to empower families and communities to guide gifted individuals to reach their goals: intellectually, physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually."

They offer online webinars, conduct research, and publish numerous articles about the needs of gifted children. They also have a newsletter that you can subscribe to from their home page.

There are too many great articles to share here, so for today we have selected one: "Thinking Along the Same Lines" - what does it mean for gifted children to be with like-minded peers?

Upcoming Community Events

The international Caribou Math Contests begin this month. This is a series of 6 online math tests that are administered throughout the school year for children who enjoy math challenges. Cash prizes are awarded for top scorers. The competition is free for children in grades 3-4 or $15 for all tests for children in grades 5-12. Schools may have a license for this competition. The first contest is on October 19 & 20.

Math Challenge @ Western meets once a month throughout the school year, beginning in October. This is aimed at grades 5-12, though they welcome children who wish to participate at levels that are higher than their age would suggest if they require more of a challenge. Participation fee is $40 for as many sessions at as many levels as a child wishes.

October 10: Thanksgiving at Fanshawe Pioneer Village. Learn how pioneers prepared for the winter and enjoy a thanksgiving dinner. This is the last day the village is open for the year.
