Week of February 18th
Pre-kindergarten Enrollment Begins February 19
A child who has a strong developmental foundation will be much more likely to succeed in school. Through the district’s Pre-kindergarten (Pre-K) program, teachers provide a stimulating Pre-K environment with engaging hands-on activities essential to the growth and development of each child. Enrollment is fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis!
Enrollment is open to children who live within the Shawnee Mission School District boundaries and who will be 4-years-old on or before Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019. Click here to find out more about Pre-kindergarten enrollment in the Shawnee Mission School District.
For qualifying families, the program is free. There is also a tuition-based Pre-K option. Pre-K will be offered at 18 elementary schools in the 2019-2020 school year.
Starting on Enrollment Day, which is Tuesday, February 19, future Pre-kindergarten students and their family members are invited to enroll at the school the child will attend. For more information about Pre-kindergarten sites and how to find out what school your child will attend, click here. If Pre-kindergarten is not offered within your school boundary yet, there may be a school nearby that does offer the program.
Pre-Kindergarten will be offered at the following schools in the 2019-2020 school year.
No-fee half-day Title I Pre-K option (Qualifications apply) offered at Comanche, Merriam Park, Rosehill, and Shawanoe.
No-fee half-day grant-funded Pre-K option (Qualifications apply) offered at ApacheIS, Bluejacket-Flint, Briarwood, Brookridge, Broken Arrow, Crestview, Highlands, Lenexa Hills, Rising Star, Roesland, Santa Fe Trail, and Shawanoe.
Tuition-based half-day Pre-K option offered at Briarwood, Brookwood, Highlands, Lenexa Hills, Rhein Benninghoven, and Trailwood.
For more information, call 913-993-6441. You can download an enrollment packet here in English and here in Spanish.

- District Enrollment Packet
- Identity of Student (Original Birth Certificate or Passport)
- Immunization Records (Students cannot start school without Immunizationrecords on file)
- Proof of Residency (Lease Agreement or Mortgage Statement). This form can be obtained from the school secretary.
- Two recent utility bills (electric, gas or water), within the last 45 days. (Note: if these utilities are included in your apartment rental fees then two secondary utility bills [i.e. cable, phone] should be provided).
- Legible copy of Kansas driver’s license/ID or government issued photo ID.
- Screening Document (A screening of your child will be done at school during enrollment.)
- IPT (ELL Proficiency Test - to be done at school). For English Language Learners only.

FOOD SERVICE….Did you know…………
Did you know that physical activity and nutrition work together for better health? Regular physical activity can produce long-term health benefits. People of all ages, shapes, sizes, and abilities can benefit from being physically active. The more physical activity you do, the greater the health benefits. Children and adolescents should do 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. Most of the 60 minutes should be either moderate- or vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity. For more information, please visit: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/physical-activity.html or http://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/everyone/guidelines/children.html.
Don’t forget – if your child receives free or reduced meals, they are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch per day as part of this benefit. All breakfast and lunch meal choices are available for all students regardless of eligibility status.
The school breakfast menus, lunch menus, and other nutrition information are available on the district’s website at https://www.smsd.org/about/departments/food-service.
