Lincoln Middle School
November 5, 2022
Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Monday, November 7, from 3:15pm - 5:45pm. Conferences are only one venue for home/school communication. Parents and guardians should feel comfortable to contact team leaders (listed below) or any teacher during the school year. We appreciate your efforts to partner with us throughout your child's middle school experience.

Mr. Steen has provided the article below with information regarding school attendance. As the school office is expected to record accurate daily attendance, I want to remind families to notify the school of their child's absence promptly (before 8:00am). The school attendance line is a 24-hour service: 847.394.7350, Press 1. Absences, late arrivals, and early dismissals may also be sent via email to aharrington@d57.org and rmoran@d57.org. Accounting for all students, every school day, is our first and foremost daily priority. Thank you for your cooperation in the student attendance process.
Finally, on behalf of the entire Lincoln staff, I extend a warm thank-you to the Lincoln PTO for their welcoming and generous Fall Staff Appreciation events. Grab-n-Go snacks along with a generous luncheon during conferences were enjoyed by all. We are aware that Lincoln families have busy lives too and we appreciate the time and generosity afforded to us. Lincoln staff recognizes how fortunate we are to work with students in the District 57 community.
Sincerely,
Eric Larson, Principal
P.S. Student portraits will be distributed to students on Monday. Please be sure to check your child's backpack. (Retake portraits are not yet available for distribution.)
Attendance Information From Mr. Steen
This is regarding student absences as recorded in the PowerSchool Portal.
Parents are already aware that they can check their child's grades using the PowerSchool Portal. However, parents may also check their child's attendance. Absences are recorded in first period only. An "A" (excused absence), "N" (unexcused absence), "H" (excused half-day absence), or "U" (unexcused half-day absence) indicates a child was absent from school. Whether a student is excused or unexcused is based on the reason for the absence. Excused absences are for valid reasons which include, but are not limited to, illness, death in the immediate family, family emergency, situations beyond the student's control, and safety reasons. An unexcused absence is given if a parent did not contact the school, a parent contacted the school and gave no reason for the absence, or if the reason is not valid. On rare occasions, the school may ask for documentation in order to determine if the absence is excused or unexcused. In addition, a student must be in attendance for 300 minutes (5 hours) to get credit for a full day and 150 minutes (2.5 hours) to get credit for a half day. Lunch/recess minutes do not count toward the required number of minutes. Thus, it is possible for a student who was at school for 2 class periods (120 minutes) to be listed as a full-day absence because the student didn't meet the 150-minute requirement.
To make things more confusing regarding your child's total number of absences, the PowerSchool Portal shows a half-day absence as missing one full day of school. Thus, the total number of absences may not be correctly shown if your child has half-day absences. The report card is a child's official document for attendance and the report card correctly counts half-day absences as 0.5.
Being tardy to class is different than tardy to school. Tardies to class are recorded by the individual classroom teacher and are not reflected on the PowerSchool Portal. Tardies to school, however, are viewable in the PowerSchool Portal and are recorded in the advisory period. A “T” in the advisory column indicates your child was tardy to school. All tardies to school are considered unexcused unless a signed note for an appointment (doctor, dentist, etc.,) is given to the assistant principal.
