Journey to the West
- In 1697, Peter set out to study western technology. He learned many skills from western culture.
- When he returned to Russia he brought along of experts, teachers, and soldiers he recruited in the west.
- He imposed Westernization on the Russian people and became the most autocratic of Europe's absolute monarchs.
Days as a Czar
- Peter worked to build Russia's military power. He created the largest standing army in Europe and went off to extend Russia's border. In 1700, Peter had a long war against Sweden.
- Early on Russia suffered humiliating defeats from the small but strong Swedish army.
- Undaunted by this Peter rebuilt his army and defeated the Swedes and won land in 1709.
Peter's Personality
- Humble man looking to have a beer after a long day with some sailors.
- Didn't like fancy clothes that restricted his movement.
- An energetic, impulsive, and fun guy overall

- Hated dishonesty and got extremely angry when there was a opposing force.
- Could only be soothed by friends and his beloved wife Catherine.

- Peter pushed through social and economic reforms.
- He imported new technology, improved education.
- Disliked anyone that opposed his views and wanted people to follow him
- Ordered the Boyars to cut their beards and wear modern clothing instead of traditional robes
