New Year- means RESOLUTIONS
The new year begins a new chapter in the lives of everyone. New goals, new adventures, new beginnings. With this new year, I challenge you to start something new, change something to make new, or set a goal. A resolution is simply just a firm decision…a goal that betters yourself or something for someone else. What's your RESOLUTION?

3rd Grade Landmark Research
3rd graders worked diligently in November and December to research a man-made landmark. Art class, library, and classroom teachers worked together to have student prepare a presentation/artwork on landmarks around the world. Students were to decide upon a landmark-research, investigate, prepare a slide presentation on the new Google Chomes. After researching, students illustrated over one of their landscape pieces in art class. Jamie Kolb the art teacher at VHEW was the brains behind the project I can't wait to see their final illustrated products. Their slide presentations and research were top notch and I expect nothing less from their artwork.
2nd Grade New Year's Resolutions
2nd graders read the story There by Marie- Louise Fitzpatrick and decided on a resolution they think they could achieve over the next year. Posted on the New Year's bulletin board are some of the resolutions- some will make you laugh, some make you cry, and most will make you want to be a better person. Love the sweet spirit of these kiddos at WEST.
K/1st Graders
Kindergarteners and 1st graders finished studying our Author Susan Stevens Crummel and reviewed her book to share their thoughts about Find a Cow NOW! a story about the dog Houdini who has too much energy and is told he needs to go herd a cow.
Susan Stevens Crummel- visiting author
Susan Stevens Crummel was our visiting author January 23rd and can I just say she was fantastic! She brought so much energy and shared the story behind her stories she co-writes with her sister Janet Stevens. We were well entertained, laughing, screaming, and acting out skits from her books. She has written 17 books with her sister and we hope she has many more. Check out her website www.susanstevenscrummel.com and check out her book trailer for Little Red Pen.
Reader's Theater
Tons of students were able to participate in a readers theater (or oral theater in this case) using Mrs. Crummel's books.
Engaged Participation
Mrs. Crummel was full of life and spirit. Every student was engaged in her laughable program. They had a lot of loud fun.
Library Luncheon
PTO provided lunch for Mrs. Crummel, a grade level rep, and a few special area teachers. They were able to chat and ask questions about her background in writing and how her stories are all taken from real life events.
WEST LIBRARY
We are the Vestavia Hills Elementary West Library and we host more than 11,000 award winning titles and great books. We are on a fixed schedule where students visit once a week with their class, but the library is open all through the day (7:30-3:30) for individual and group checkouts and our classes stop in all the time to check out and to grab books for research and for enjoyment reading. Parents are encouraged to stop in and grab an account to check out books as well. See you soon.
