Principal's Message

Happy New Year! I hope you had a restful break and enjoyed the additional time with family. I relished in the slower pace the two weeks afforded and our family spent lots of time cooking, reading, playing games, sledding, hiking, and watching movies.

While I enjoyed the break, I am glad to be back seeing happy, healthy children filling the hallways and classrooms. One of our 1st graders recently shared with an Educational Assistant that "we are really lucky to go to such a good school with such nice kids" and I couldn't agree more.

We completed our review of school-wide expectations on Tuesday and I am so proud of our Student Council leaders who led these stations for the entire school! I am equally proud of our student body who were respectful listeners and shared thoughts about how to be safe, respectful and responsible in a variety of school settings. I was especially touched when students shared what they want to hear ("laughing, encouraging words"), see ("inclusion, playing, happiness"), do ("play"), and feel ("welcomed, included, happy") at recess. These children are amazing and provide us with daily reminders about what matters most...caring for one another.

I wish you and your family much health and happiness in this coming year. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

In collaboration,

Martin Luther King, Jr. Assembly and March

On Friday, January 17, 2020 Helman will join with Bellview Elementary, John Muir Outdoor School, and Willow Wind Community Learning Center to celebrate the leadership and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We will participate in an assembly at Ashland High School Gymnasium followed by a reenactment of the March on Washington. The focus of the march and student led assembly will be civic action and social justice. Permission slips are coming home this week and can be downloaded below. Parents are welcome to join us. If you would like to chaperone, please make sure you are on the Ashland School District list of cleared volunteers by contacting Malinda Wood in the Helman Office.

Parent chaperones are welcome to join us in the Cafeteria this Friday, January 10 at 2:15 to learn the songs.

Please be sure to send your children with coats, hats, and gloves for this field trip. We will march rain, sleet, or shine!
