Glyphs & Grapsh
Glyphs are pictorial representations of data collected. The term comes from "hieroglyphics" which is early picture writing. The medical profession uses glyphs to record data about a patient. Sometimes "a picture can worth a thousand words!" This month students have been creating graphs in the computer lab. Students record data in a table and then drag color boxes to construct a bar graph representing the figures collected. Using the whiteboard to demonstrate how to construct the color bars was fun, and children made observations of the graphs created. The Graph Club is an easy-to-use software tool that allows the students to create, interpret and explore five different graph types. Comparing different representations of the same data builds critical thinking skills. Excel 2010 is used with students in Grades 3-6 to construct various types of charts and graphs.
