5th Grade at Bear Creek Elementary

Week 17 - January 18th - 22nd

Dear Families,

We want thank you for helping keep our communities safe! We understand the sacrifices families are making by keeping their kids at home. It is extremely difficult to juggle your own schedule and the schedule of a fifth grader (and possibly a sibling). We do not want you to feel like you need to do anything extra as far as academics go. That is our job and we intend to make this difficult time as easy on you as possible. Please reach out to us with any questions or concerns regarding remote learning. We truly appreciate everything you are doing for your family, Bear Creek Elementary and our community. Thank you!

MOY Testing

This week, the students will be taking a math and reading MOY (Middle Of Year) test. Please reinforce that tests are in place to help us gauge our strengths and weaknesses academically. We try not to put too much pressure on the final grade, but would rather put an emphasis on academic growth.

Back to School Night

Normally, "Back to School Night" is at the beginning of the year. However, this is anything but a "normal" school year. We would love to meet with families (completely optional) this Thursday night (1/21) starting at 6:30 pm. Our primary goal with our "Back to School Night" is to cover content. We want to show parents where our content is, how to access it, etc. We want to show you the daily/weekly assignments that we are asking fifth graders to complete.

Bear Creek's First Annual Science Conference

In science class, we have been discuss the Austin Regional Science Festival and the Bear Creek Science Conference. We decided to make the science fair optional, but offer alternatives in its place. This has been an on-going conversation with students starting in December. They will have options this year for their science project, including the Austin Regional Science Festival. If your child has decided to participate in the Austin Regional Science Festival, you will need to use their website for registration and participation guidelines. All other projects will follow the rubrics that have been provided in the science conference website.

What we're doing in class this week...

ELAR/Social Studies: Since this week is a short week and we have MOY testing, we will not have vocabulary words. We will be focusing on Sophia's War in ELAR and gearing up for our friendly debate in Social Studies.

Math: This week in math, we will review ALL content to prepare for our math MOY.

Science: This week in science, we will be studying Earth's position in the solar system. We will look at other celestial objects in our solar system too. Please check your child's PLP for their assignments this week. Also, ask your child about their progress monitoring sheet.
