We hope everyone is able to spend precious times with loved ones, make new memories, and reflect on the blessings that 2022 brought to our lives. Bethany Elementary School
Bethany Elementary held a SWAG celebration the morning of November 28! What a great way to start the day! We are so proud of our students who show greatness!

What an incredible evening we had at Bethany Elementary School, as almost 200 members of our Rockingham County community joined the Colombian teachers in celebrating “El dia de las velitas.” We are so thankful for everyone who helped us make this night so memorable!

Booker T. Washington Learning Center (SCORE)
Booker T. Washington High School held a 100th anniversary celebration on the afternoon of Monday, December 5. Principal Matthew Rice gave a series of opening comments, and also presented a 19-minute video about the long and rich history of BTWLC - the longest continually-running school educating children in Rockingham County, in existence since 1922.
Superintendent Stover provided some comments, as did Reidsville Mayor Donald Gorham, a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. Another BTW graduate, Anne Stadler-Witcher of the Booker T. Washington Heritage Association, spoke to the guests, as well as FOX 8 News, about her memories of Booker T. Washington, as did another BTW graduate and Heritage Association member, Penny Neal Simpson.
RCS and BTWLC would thank to thank the following individuals for their efforts to make this 100th anniversary celebration such a special event! Phil Bray, Cindy Sharpe, Flo Macklin, Kimberly Blackwell, Matthew Rice, Serena Hooker, Turnette Chestnut, Michelle Daniels-Chestnut, Gregory Black Jr. of Black’s Boxing Academy, Janice Anderson, Latoya Robertson, Hydeia Collington, Alfreda Haith, Ashley Doss, Anne Witcher, Michael Chestnut Tax Service, Angela Chestnut-Black, as well as the faculty and staff of the Booker T. Washington Learning Center, and the Booker T. Washington Heritage Association, which has worked so hard over the years to preserve the rich history of Booker T. Washington High School!

Central Elementary School
On Monday, December 12th, Central Elementary School held its third annual drive-thru Winter Wonderland themed Title 1 night! Students were excited to see their teachers dressed as different characters, and each of them received a book we will all read together as a school!
Dillard Academy
Dillard Academy's fifth graders had a wonderful time in Washington D.C. last week. Thank you to all the parents who joined us on this amazing trip!
Kindergarteners disguised turkeys and held a turkey parade through the school after reading "Turkey Trouble" to celebrate Thanksgiving! Dillard Academy welcomed grandparents to come eat lunch with their grandchildren for Thanksgiving! We are "Grateful for Grandparents!
Dillard’s first grade visited third grade to show off their balloons they made after reading "Balloons Over Broadway"--Macy's Day parade book!
We loved our second grade Moravian Field Trip to learn about cultural traditions! Students also learned that Thomas Edison and Henry Ford are among the famous visitors to Mayodan!
Students in Dillard Academy’s first and second grade performed "Grandma's Truck" along with chorus and drums for the school and for parents. They did an amazing job!
Dillard Academy’s Royal Court participated in the Christmas Parade this past Saturday!
The Dillard Academy Chorus, led by Mrs. Combs, collected donations for the Rockingham County Animal Shelter this holiday season!
Douglass Elementary School
Students that sold at least three boxes of chocolate in our fundraiser had an incredible experience! As a reward for their hard work, they got to take a limo ride for lunch at El Parral!
Douglass Elementary kindergarten and functional skills students had a wonderful time on their field trip to see Disney on Ice! Our first graders had a marvelous time on their field trip to see Frosty the Snowman in Winston-Salem!
Congratulations to our Good Bus Citizens for the month of November! Thank you for being a role model while riding the bus. Congratulations to these students for demonstrating SOAR expectations on the bus throughout the month of November!
Our second graders had a wonderful field trip to the NC Transportation Museum aboard the Polar Express! We have been enjoying our dress up days leading to winter break!
Our first graders collected 115 canned food items during their book study of Maddi’s Fridge! Douglass Elementary fifth graders got a visit from Meteorologist Daniel Crews! He discussed his job and how he forecasts the weather along with different weather topics that will be on the fifth grade Science EOG!

Holmes Middle School
At the first Parks Club meeting, students learned about Fort McHenry in honor of Veterans Day! They also learned a Native American legend about Bear Lodge, the natives’ name for Devils Tower National Monument!
Students in Mrs. Huss's seventh grade math class played The Unfair Game! It is a classroom friendly version of Dirty Santa. Prizes include silly $1 items, candy, or school supplies! Once the prizes are all claimed, students with correct answers can 'steal' a prize! The Unfair Part comes into play because a spinner is used to determine who gets to answer! It was a fun time for everyone!
Congratulations to Colin and Colton Ferrell, who received first place in the Earth Science/Environmental category at the district Science Fair! They now advance on to the regional fair!
Our academic team competed in the district competition on December 5th and represented HMS with pride. Go Mustangs!
Huntsville Elementary School
Huntsville Elementary School received a Lowe’s Home Improvement Store’s annual Heroes Project Grant to build an outdoor classroom through the school’s PTA! This is very exciting news! We are happy for everyone at Huntsville Elementary!
Shout Out to Ms. Tamara Mills—Huntsville’s favorite turkey! Thank you for spreading joy in our school community! We are very grateful for the creativity, love, and fun you bring to the school!
Students in Miss Stevens’s and Mrs. Williams’s classes brought parade magic of the big city to the halls of Huntsville. Students first read a book entitled, Balloons Over Broadway, and talked about marionettes. Next, the classes used their knowledge of arrays to create terrific skyscrapers to line the hallway. The students then had the opportunity to let their creativity flow as they created balloons like they might see in a parade. The two classes shared their art with a parade that was held on the hallway with their other second grade friends. What an incredible cross-curricular activity!

Leaksville-Spray Elementary School
Mr. Sullivan likes to borrow cell phones during staff meetings to take selfies! Our LSE teachers and students love visiting the Roasted Bean!

LSE is counting down the days until winter break! We celebrated by wearing blue and white, and dressing like an elf or a reindeer!

Lincoln Elementary School
Our wonderful kindergarten teachers are rocking out Fundations! Building solid foundational literacy skills! Kindergarten students also participated in a Friendsgiving pie tasting!
Our Lincoln Gator community showed up and showed out with our annual food drive! 3,800 items were brought in and donated to Rockingham Hope & Lot 2540 to support our community! Our House Leaders took a pie to the face for meeting our food Drive donation goal!
Our K-3 students were able to participate in a mobile dairy farm demonstration from Southland Dairy Farms! Students met sweet Maple the cow! They learned so many cool facts about cows and how cows produce milk which gives them cheese, yogurt, and other things we all enjoy eating! First graders had a blast visiting Lazy 5 and getting up close to the animals!
The Lincoln community rolled up their sleeves to give the gift of life this holiday season at our Blood Drive! Students came together to create ornaments for our lobby Christmas tree! #nogatorplacetobe

McMichael High School
The DMHS Pep Club held Christmas with the Phoenix on December 9! Children up to fifth grade were able to take part in crafts, cookie decorating, face painting and were able to meet Santa!

McMichael High STEM students win top honors in class catapult competition! Students in Drafting 1 learned to use AutoCAD and OnShape CAD softwares to create designs for a custom catapult to compete in both a distance and accuracy competitions. Students physically made their designs using the class laser cutter. Afterwards, they practiced and fine tuned their machines while collecting data. Congrats to STEM Freshman Easton Tillman, winner of the Distance Competition, and STEM Sophomore Paxson Stephens, winner of the Accuracy Competition!
We are so very proud of our Fall 2022 Nursing Fundamentals class that were recently pinned! McMichael’s new CNA’s! This was a special night for Ms. Holder, as she will be retiring soon. Her program here at McMicharl has been stellar!
Not only did the DMHS Lady Phoenix Volleyball Team bring home the 2A State Championship this season, but several of them earned some special awards as well! Congratulations to all of these young ladies on their accomplishments!
The McMichael Band and Dance team participated in the Stoneville parade in early December! The McMichael Holiday Band concert was fabulous at WRMS! It ended with magical snow from a snow machine! Great job Mr. Foote and band!
The Rockingham County Schools 2022 District Science Fair award ceremony was held on December 2 at Osborne Baptist Church in Eden, recognizing students’ achievements in science comprehension and presentation through science project displays. A total of 98 projects were entered in the fair to compete for the chance to advance to the Region 5 Science Fair to be held at College at UNC Greensboro on January 28, 2023. First and second place winners advance to the Regional Competition. Congrats to all of the McMichael High district winners who will be moving on to the Regionals!
Monroeton Elementary School
Third grade Mustangs took a trip back in time to Old Salem!
Fifth grade Mustangs represented our school at the district Science Fair! Makena Wray and Elizabeth Brown finished in second place and will compete in Regionals! Jackson Williams, Mason McGibbony, and Cathan Williams finished in third place. Way to go Mustangs!

Morehead High School
A total of 65 Morehead High School seniors were recently recognized for their accomplishments of receiving either A Honor Roll, A/B Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, demonstrating characteristics of PBIS, Responsibility and/or being a Mighty Panther! It was great to celebrate the accomplishments of our Panthers! Honor roll, perfect attendance, mighty panther and character trait - responsibility!
The Pride of Morehead Marching Band represented Eden, Rockingham County Schools, and MHS in the Novant Health Thanksgiving Eve Parade in Charlotte, NC on Wednesday, November 23rd. This parade is the largest holiday parade in the south and one of the largest parades in the country! The band completed the marching season Saturday, December 3rd with a parade in Draper and a second parade in Stoneville that afternoon. It was a terrific season and we are grateful for all of the support we have received!
It was a busy week in Dr. Dabbs' Foundations of Health Science class as students learned different skills every day, including wound care and first aid! The students were also patients for Mrs. Edwards' Nursing Fundamental students! The “Cartoon Club” at Morehead High School was underway with creative students drawing and enjoying their favorite cartoons! For any students who may be interested in joining this club, it meets every Monday from 3:30 to 4:45.
Congratulations to all of the MHS Robotics teams for a great start of the VEX Robotics season! Team 9064Y had to win their way into the elimination rounds. Teams 9064W, 9064Y and 9064Z made it to the semifinals and team 9064X ended the day as Tournament Champions and the Excellence Award winners! This qualifies 9064X for the NC VRC State Championships in March! Excellent work by all!
Seven cadets from the Army JROTC program volunteered with the American Legion Post #534 and VFW Post #7033 in Mayodan, NC at their annual “Bring A Vet & Their Family Luncheon” on November 12! The Morehead High School Interact Club has been busy! They participated in an Adopt-A-Street on Pierce St., and also held a fundraiser for the Polio Foundation to help eradicate Polio!
Morehead High School welcomed local eighth grade elective classrooms once again this year before their 2023-2024 student registration begins! The MHS staff and students were excited to showcase all of the wonderful opportunities that are available to the eighth grade students to help them achieve their career-ready goals in their upcoming time as Panthers! Small group visits took place from Monday, December 5th through Wednesday, December 7th!

Reidsville Middle School
Congratulations to our Raiders who were recognized as Students of the Week for demonstrating Citizenship at school. Keep up the good work! RMS Students of Success enjoyed a special holiday field trip! They went to Tanglewood Festival of Lights. The entire group posed by the large star display!
Reidsville Middle School bus drivers were given a holiday treat bag from Administration! They are always there to make sure that our students go to and from school, safely and on time. RMS sixth grade beginning band students have been spreading holiday cheer by performing for staff and students around the school. They did a great job in their Holiday concert on December 13!
RMS kicked off Thanksgiving week with a Turkey Trot that raised $263 for PBIS. The Staff member with the most votes, winning the title of 2022 RMS Biggest Turkey was Ms. Slade! The Sixth grade teacher with the most Turkey votes was Ms. Hodges! The Seventh grade teacher with the most Turkey votes was Mrs. Wilson! The Eighth grade teacher with the most Turkey votes was Mr. Cunningham!

Reidsville High School
Congratulations to the Reidsville Rams varsity football team for winning the NCHSAA 2A West Regional championship! It was another great season for Coach Teague and the Rams, and everyone throughout RCS is proud of you!
Reidsville High Rams head football coach Jimmy Teague was recognized during halftime of the November 27 Carolina Panthers - Denver Broncos game in Charlotte as the Carolina Panthers High School Coach of the Week! Congratulations Coach Teague on another outstanding season with the Rams!
Mechanics from OSS, Inc. did a little more than come and reassemble a couple of machines at Reidsville High School! They took the time to show the Machining students the inside of a lathe machine that they would not normally see - the gear box! The tech mechanics explained how it worked and ways to troubleshoot!
Reidsville High’s Creative Design and Arts Academy (CDAA) students visited UNCG's campus, where they were able to see where they can take their skills and education even farther! The students were able to see an extention of each of the pathways offered at RHS in CDAA!

Rockingham County Middle School
RCMS students in conexiones class are enjoying the new platform vista level learning, which supports differentiated instruction and practice by providing multi-level social studies, science books and authentic literature in Spanish! Here they are creating their avatar to start reading! Mrs. Byess's classes are currently reading a novel titled, "The Trail". This novel fits perfectly in the unit topic of survival. Students have enjoyed reading with partners, analyzing the chapters, drawing and presenting main characters, snacking on gorp (good old raisins and peanuts), and many other novel activities!
Mrs. Schraufnagel, Ms. Clegg, and Mrs. Byess have their students divided up into four teams. Each team strives to earn points for positive behavior. Every four weeks the team in the lead wins a reward. The first reward of the year was ice cream sandwich sundaes and a little free time to hang out as a team! Mrs. Petty's class used their inference skills to solve a Thanksgiving mystery! Their collaboration revealed grandma as the culprit. Everyone was shocked that grandma would commit such an act. A yummy slice of pumpkin pie helped calm their shattered spirits!
Sixth grade beginning band students played more than just the standard instruments in band as they got ready for their Christmas Concert on Tuesday, December 13th! Thanks to all of these students for all of their hard work transitioning from their former instrument to their new ones! They help the band sound like a bigger band!
RCMS students experimenting with Potential and Kinetic Energy! Amazing learning opportunities happening in our elective classrooms! Mrs. Cummings eighth grade ELA groups became Crime Scene Investigators and worked together to determine if Edgar Allen Poe was murdered!

Rockingham County High School
The Rockingham County High School FFA chapter has been recognized in the 2022 National Chapter Award Program from the National FFA Organization. The program recognizes outstanding FFA chapters from throughout the country that actively implement the mission and strategies of the organization. These chapters improve chapter operations using the National Quality FFA Chapter Standards and a Program of Activities that emphasizes growing leaders, building communities and strengthening agriculture. Chapters are rewarded for providing educational experiences for the entire membership. All star-rated FFA chapters receive honors made possible by corporate sponsor John Deere.
The 2022 FFA Christmas Party was a hit - or maybe it was the chicken quesadillas that drew them in! We had 32 members attend! Fun was had by all, bellies were filled, and mostly everyone left with a fun gift!
Rockingham County High School’s FFA Livestock Judging team, consisting of Sarah Anthony, Caroline Mansfield, Mallary Walker and Addison Farris, ranked 63rd out of 117 participating schools in the state, and ranked ninth in our region! Addison Farris individually placed 26th out of 435 participants, and second place in the West Central Region! There were a record breaking 800-plus FFA members competing from all across the state in this year’s annual competition!
The Rockingham County High School ROTC Cadets participated in the Pearl Harbor Remembrance at RCHS, as well as supporting the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Wentworth Park!
RCHS volleyball standouts Kayla Pruitt, Hadlee Russell, Macey Hardy, Kendall Hall, Bailey Macey, and Jessie Scearce received All-Conference honors this fall for the Cougars! Russell was also named the Mid-State Conference Defensive Player of the Year, and Cassie Gover was selected as the Mid-State Conference 3A Coach of the Year! Way to go Cougars!
RCHS Cadets performed a Flag Retirement Ceremony, in which Cadets gave the flag one last salute and played “Taps” as it was retired by fire.
Rockingham County High School hosted Rockingham County Middle School students on December 6th to introduce them to the high school and the opportunities offered at RCHS! RCMS eighth graders rotated between three stations in which they met the counselors, learned about CTE classes, ROTC, Fine Arts classes and enjoyed a tour of the school! This was a great opportunity to meet our future Cougars!
Wall Court at Rockingham County High School received a massive upgrade to the 40-plus year-old gymnasium. We now have a new floor and new bleachers! We are probably biased, but this floor is one of our favorite layouts! Thanks to everyone who made this beautiful new facilities possible for our students!
Rockingham Early College High School
All RECHS District Science Fair entries placed and are going to Regionals!Congrats to Dakota Cornett, first place in Earth Science, and Rosa Guitierrez and Maddie Visaya, second place in Chemistry! We are proud of you all!
RECHS National Honor Society students volunteered at the Toys for Tots warehouse! Thank you to Mrs. Bankston and all students that attended to spread a little holiday cheer!
RECHS kicked off the 12 Days Till Christmas Break Spirit Days! PJ pants and hat day were successful as the countdown began!. It was a great way to celebrate the end of the first semester!
At RECHS. on December 1st, nine students from Mr. Johnson's English 4 class presented their projects during the Senior Showcase! We are very proud of you all! Your commitment to the project was evident in the presentations!
South End Elementary School
First graders in Mrs. Gillie's class received incentives for good behavior based off of their dojo point earnings! Keep up the great behavior! South End kindergarten and first grade students participated in Holidays Around the World! Students learned how other countries celebrate holidays and created crafts for those countries!
The holiday season always makes up extra thankful, and we are oh so thankful for our office staff and all they do around South End!
South End Elementary fourth grade students enjoyed working cooperatively while playing volleyball with Mrs. Tuttle!
Mrs. Gillie's class is "I ready" for Christmas!
Ms. Knight's fourth grade class did a community service project for those who were undergoing chemotherapy treatments. They created 15 Chemo Care packages for local hospitals and will deliver them soon! They were able to collect Chapstick, pajamas, hats, games, crosswords, coloring books, etc. for children and adults in local hospitals!
South End Elementary fifth grade classes have been hard at work reading the novel “Restart” and learning how to solve word problems! At our South End Beginning Teacher’s meeting, teachers got to know their colleagues by playing “Spoons!”
Stoneville Elementary School
Stoneville Elementary Custodians are the best! Kindergarten staff and students gave an appreciation lunch and cards from each class for our custodians Mr. Jeff, Mr. Keck, and Mrs. Vanessa on Tuesday, November 21!
Mrs. Meeks' second graders had fun making butter and practicing their weaving skills!
Stoneville Elementary had its Title I Math and Science event, called "Winter Wonderland!” Grades 3-5 participated in a musical performance right after!
Stoneville Elementary hosted its fall Book Fair!

Western Rockingham Middle School students collected 1,067 food items to donate to a local food pantry for those in need! Pictured below are some of our sixth grade SGA representatives packing up the food to be delivered. Way to go Wildcats!
The Western Rockingham Middle seventh and eighth grade band Winter Concert was great! Don’t forget to visit the Dewey’s Bakery Shop at Madison Pharmacy and Homecare for your holiday goodies! Proceeds benefit our band program!
Williamsburg Elementary School
Williamsburg Elementary School’s Holiday Season Countdown! We are making this a December to Remember! We have filled our halls with Festive Cheer and wear all the Holiday gear! Each day will have a different theme! Elf Day was a huge success!
We are so proud of our Williamsburg Super Science Fair participants in the district competition! All participants did great, and we have one moving on to the Regional competition!!
Our Kindergarten students felt the magic as they watched the Disney on Ice performance!
The Williamsburg Fun Run was a huge success this year! We want to give a huge Shout Out to all the parents, staff, and of course Mr. Davis for making this fundraiser happen! The students had a great time running and walking to raise money for our school!

Serena Hooker of the Rockingham County Schools Day Treatment Center was recognized at the RCS Board of Education December meeting the evening of December 12 in recognition of receiving the Exceptional Educator of Excellence Award. We are so grateful to Serena Hooker for her excellent work with our students. Congratulations! The RCS Day Treatment Center had a special breakfast for parents and families prior to the Holiday break as well!
At Monday night’s RCS Board of Education meeting, three Board members were sworn in - new member Philip Butler, and returning Board members Kimberly McMichael and Paula Rakestraw. Congratulations to all three Board members for their swearing-in, and we thank them for their service to our children!
At Monday night’s RCS Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Stover gave a plaque in appreciation to Doug Isley at his final meeting as a member of the Board of Education. RCS thanks Doug Isley for his four years of service to the students of Rockingham County from 2018 to 2022, and for his passion for our children!
Rockingham County Schools is pleased to announce the hiring of Nina Walls as the district's new Director of Career and Technical Education/ Innovation. Mrs. Walls brings more than 20 years of experience with Rockingham County Schools into her new role. Mrs. Walls was approved as the district’s new CTE/Innovation Director by the RCS Board of Education at its December 12 meeting. Congrats to Mrs. Walls, and we welcome her to her newest role with Rockingham County Schools!
The Rockingham County Schools 2022 District Science Fair award ceremony was held on December 2 at Osborne Baptist Church in Eden, recognizing students’ achievements in science comprehension and presentation through science project displays. A total of 98 projects were entered in the fair to compete for the chance to advance to the Region 5 Science Fair to be held at College at UNC Greensboro on January 28, 2023. First and second place winners advance to the Regional Competition. The 2022 Science Fair judges were: Val Pyrtle, Roman Gunn, Kimberley Thompson-Hairston, Alyssa Slater, Kelly Page, Mary Doggett, Krystle Massey and Lisa Miller. All Rockingham County Schools Science Fair award winners are photographed below! Congrats to all the winners who will be moving on to the Regional competition!

Amanda Perkins, RCS’s Lead School Nurse, served on a panel at the State School Nurse Conference at the Koury Convention Center. Mrs. Perkins and Dr. Stephanie Ellis also presented at two sessions as well at the State School Nurse Conference!
