Hocker Grove Family Newsletter
October 5, 2020.
SECTION 1: NEW/UPDATED INFORMATION THIS WEEK
Good Evening Eagle Families,
Please note, Option 2 (remote) students will not be affected. They will continue to learn remotely.
There won't be an opportunity to change the selected learning model until later this semester in preparation for the start of the second semester.
For now, all families are encouraged to review the district's middle school reopening plan for specific information. A weekly schedule for Hybrid learners can be found in Appendix D (pg 53) of the reopening plan. One item of note is that the district adjusted assignments for days in hybrid learning based on the students last name. Students with last names beginning A-Lamb will be at school on Mondays and Tuesdays while students with last names beginning Lamc-Z will learn remotely on those days. Those roles will reverse on Wednesdays and Thursdays. All students will be remote learners on Fridays.
Be on the lookout for continued communication in upcoming parent newsletters. We will continue to update information to ensure families are informed of processes and procedures for a safe return to school.
NWEA MAP Testing Next Two Weeks
With MAP testing beginning this week at home for ELA (October 6-8) and Math next week (October 13-5), we want to remind everyone about how to ensure the best and most accurate testing results. Please check out the image below for tips.
- Student fall MAP data provides teachers, parents, and students a baseline for where students are in the learning continuum.
- MAP data is a great resource for teachers to know students' strength areas and growth areas and can drive the instruction taking place in the classroom.
- Teachers want to know what your student knows. Please talk with your student about this being an opportunity to show what they know. There is no need to access outside “help” during the test to gain answers to the MAP test questions.
- Teachers want students to do their best so they can use the information provided by NWEA to better understand your student as a learner.

- The Online fee payment portal is now open and we appreciate your patience as student schedules are now finalized. Go to www.smsd.org hover over the “Families” tab and click the link entitled “Pay Fees Online”. The site can also be found at this link: https://www.smsd.org/families/pay-fees. You may also call the Hocker Grove Bookkeeper with Credit Card information to pay fees.
- Required fees include: Textbook ($80.00) covers the cost of textbooks which are still a necessity even though many are now electronic, ID card ($5.00) for printing student id cards , and Elective Course fees (Art, Humanities, Industrial Tech classes-Robotics, Design & Modeling, Projects) covering the cost of supplies for these elective classes only if students are enrolled.
- Optional fees – Student Activity ticket (offsets costs of school-wide activities and reward trips) and Yearbook – these will automatically be deleted from the student’s account if it is unpaid at the end of first quarter. The online system will allow parents the option to not pay these fees.
- All payment plans and KanCare 19 can be completed over the phone or email. KanCare has been applied to many accounts already, so please check fees in Skyward to see if the textbook & ID card fees have been waived.
