Visit to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum
On Friday January 8th students from The Kennedy Years & the American Government/Current Events classes traveled to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum to participate in a Civil Rights activity with one of the library's Education Specialists Ms. Nina Tisch.
The activity focused on the integration of Mississippi State University in the Fall of 1962. Using the library's treasure trove of materials, including the audio recordings of JFK's secret negotiations with Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett, students got a "first hand look" at what went on "behind the scenes" during this turbulent time in American history. The classroom activity was then followed by a guided tour through the Museum. Highlights of the tour included the coconut JFK used to save his stranded PT109 shipmates as well as Astronaut Alan Shepard's Freedom 7 capsule.
