Rolly Polly Lab
By: Mikaela Stokes & McKenzie Ivins
Problem:
I wonder what would happen to pill bugs if we separated them and gave them the choice of dry or damp and covered or exposed environments, checking every 30 seconds for 5 minutes.
Hypothesis:
If the pill bugs were given the choice to be in covered or non covered and damp or wet place, then they would be in a dark damp place due to them normally being found under moist rocks.
The manipulated variable in this lab is...
Moisture or not
&
Covered or not.
Control:
For the control, both would be dry and open to light.
Description:
Number of Pill bugs
Time: 30 seconds for 5 minutes
Petri dishes
Exposure to light
Materials:
2 Wet paper towels
25 Pill bugs
Timing device
5 Petri Dishes
2 Sheets of Construction Paper
Procedure for Manipulated Variable:
1. Set up 5 petri dishes with one in the middle of all 4.
2. Cover 2 of the outside petri dishes and places a wet paper towel in one covered petri dish and one non covered.
3. Place bugs inside the middle petri dish.
4. Record location of pill bugs every 30 seconds for 5 minutes.
5. Analyze data and come to a conclusion.
Procedure for Control:
1. Set up 5 petri dishes with one in the middle of all 4.
2. Place bugs inside the middle petri dish.
3. Record location of pill bugs every 30 seconds for 5 minutes.
4. Analyze data and come to a conclusion.
Control:
Experiment Observation:
Analysis:
5.94 < 9.488
Due to the chi test, we have failed to reject the nulls hypothesis. Conclusion:
According to our observations, the data does support our hypothesis because the bugs favored the wet and covered petri dish over everything else.
