Principal Message
Welcome back! I hope you and your family had a restful winter break. After a very busy summer and fall planning and implementing CDL at Jackson, stepping away from the computer with my family was an absolute gift. At Jackson, we are ready to connect with our students and ROCK the rest of the 2021 school year.
On Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2020, Governor Kate Brown issued a letter to the directors of the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and Oregon Department of Education (ODE) stating that as of Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, the health metrics guiding schools’ return to in-person learning should be considered advisory rather than mandatory. Our school district leadership has worked diligently over break, determining what this means for our students in HSD. District communication with go out to families tomorrow, 1/5, and continue at least biweekly, if not more frequently, based on available information and the health situation at the time. Thank you for your continued patience and perseverance, as we have navigated these challenging times together. I hope you and our students have a fabulous week.
Kind regards,
Principal Kasia Gutierrez

Student Support Process- Parent Guide
The Hillsboro School District Student Support Process (SSP) is a multi-tiered system of support designed to help students who are struggling in the areas of academics and/or behavior. Interventions that match the need are provided upon the initial signs of struggle and progress is monitored to determine efficacy and guide future decisions. The SSP is not special education, nor is it the path to special education, although there are times that special education evaluation results from the process.
Step 1: Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
Grade level or content teachers meet to review class data to determine who needs what additional supports. Interventions are planned and implemented. Data is taken to monitor progress. Parents are informed and their input to classroom teachers is encouraged.
Step 2: Action Team
A team of multi-level staff review data of individual students who are still struggling after step 1 interventions. New interventions or changes to the current intervention are determined. Parents are informed and their input to classroom teachers is encouraged.
Step 3: Student Study Team (SST)
A team of staff come together with parents to review all interventions and progress data to this point. The team brainstorms other interventions or changes to the current intervention. Parents participate.
Each of the 3 steps can take 6 - 24 weeks as interventions are implemented and progress is determined. This is deliberate - knowing if an intervention is working takes time and programs are designed with specific numbers of sessions needed for benefit. Steps go in order, but can be repeated.
If you have questions about the SSP process, please join my principal chat this Thursday, January 7th @ 1pm. I'll be joined by our counselor, Sarah Day, to answer questions. The zoom invite will be sent directly to your email.

In-District Transfer Priority Window
HSD students wishing to renew or request a new in-district transfer for the 2021-22 school year are urged to submit their request in January to take advantage of the priority window. While it is not guaranteed that requests submitted during the priority window will be approved, the chances are best at this time as staffing has not yet been finalized. Most applications will come through our online system, which provides the requester immediate confirmation of their submission and the option of uploading supplementary paperwork as needed. Families of students currently on a transfer will receive a letter via email or U.S. Mail alerting them to the January transfer window. Please see the Boundaries and Transfers section of our website for more information or contact Marleen Zytniowski or Katie Russell-Willis at transfers@hsd.k12.or.us or 503-844-1771 with questions.
