Overcoming obstacles

Childhood to Early Careers

As a boy the Walters family was very poor. Since his family was poor he didn't have a very good education. In 1906 Walter's father moved the family to Marcelino, Missouri. Walter at first was not very skilled at art. His grandmother and aunt were the first to encourage his artistic abilities. Since his family was poor, during his childhood Walter did not get an art education at school. Put to work at 9 years old Walter had many jobs. His first job was a paper boy. He also made deliveries to drug stores. At age 10 he opened up a soda stand but drank up all the profit. Later he drew caricatures for customers at a barber shop. He was paid with free haircuts.

Job to Death

Unable to have the job Walter really wanted as a director, Walter founded Disney Studios. After a few set backs Walter finally had a hit with the "Mickey Mouse" character. Back then Mickey was called Mortimer. In a short period of time Mickey had surpassed "Felix The Cat".v One of Mickey's most famous films is "Steam Boat Willie". It wasn't long before Walter had started on a full length film called "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". Other film companies called the movie "Disney's Folly". The other companies didn't think the film would work, even Walter's family doubted the movie. They said the movie would be a failure, but Walter was determined. When the movie was finally complete, the movie made $8 million. The equivalent of $134,033,100 today. The film was a huge success. After the film Walter set to work on making more movies such as Peter Pan, Pinocchio, and other films. Eventually Walter died of lung cancer on December 15, 1966 (aged 65).
