I Wonder
2nd Graders
FREE
In this online workshop, children will be introduced to science through language arts. We’ll read the I Wonder book, then discuss how asking great questions about what they see in their everyday lives, then testing to find out the answer, make each of them everyday scientists! The I Wonder book that we will be reading together encourages children to think about the world in which they live. Young readers will journey along with the amused explorer who shows curiosity about bees, butterflies and more!
There are two options for participating in the I Wonder program:
1) Teachers email me(DEB WEITZENKAMP) directly to coordinate a private date/time for the entire classroom to synchronously participate.
2) Parents/grandparents etc sign up using this form, and select the date/time that is most convenient for them.
All registered participants in the continental United States will receive a copy of the I Wonder book (while supplies last). Teachers who coordinate a private date/time will receive books in a pack from which they can distribute books & webinar link to the workshop to their students.
Horse Changes for 2020
UPDATED 4/3/20 - Based on your feedback, to provide more consistency among dates, the Fonner Park State 4-H Horse Expo Entry Date, Horse ID’s and Completion of Advancement Levels Dates will be June 15, 2020 (to match other 4-H entry deadlines).
Horse Advancement Level Update - March, 2020
Due to the COVID-19 situation and social distancing, there will be changes in 4-H horse Advancement Level Testing. In order to abide by social distancing recommendations, skills and demonstration testing are on hold.
We are encouraging youth to complete the written test, which will be offered online, and the reports/feed chart/healthcare charts as these pieces can be completed by youth at home. The goal is to offer the skills test and demonstration after May 9, 2020.
For 2020, we are also cancelling the District Horse Shows. All youth will be allowed to enter the Fonner Park State 4-H Expo without qualifying. Entries to the State 4-H Expo are due June 12 and the deadline for passing the advancement levels will be extended to June 12.
Dates to Note:
Written Advancement Tests Available On-Line: March 25, 2020
Skills and Demonstration Testing Available (depending upon social distancing recommendations): May 9

Advancement Levels Completed Due Date for State Entries: June 12, 2020
Stampede Entries Due: June 12, 2020
ADVANCEMENT LEVEL TESTING PROCEDURES
LEVEL 1-3 REQUIREMENTS
- Written exam: the youth can take the written exams online. Extension staff can access the links to the exams at: https://4h.unl.edu/employee/horse. Extension staff and horse examiners please only provide the link to one exam at a time to a youth. There are 4 exams for each level available (A, B, C, and D). If a youth does not receive at least an 80% on their first attempt, they will need to re-take the exam but a different version. It is recommended that youth receive one link and are asked to take the exam without using any resources. At the same website above you can find the link to a spreadsheet that lists all of the youths quiz results.
- Skills test: currently on hold. The hope is to make these tests available after May 9th. We will continue to monitor social distancing practices.
- Demonstration: Skills test: currently on hold. The hope is to make these tests available after May 9th. We will continue to monitor social distancing practices.
LEVEL 2 & 3 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Written report and feed chart emailed to county office at time of completion. Youth are encouraged to complete these while we are all practicing social distancing.
LEVEL 3 – ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT
- Health care paper emailed to county office at time of completion. Youth are encouraged to complete these while we are all practicing social distancing.
LEVEL 4 – REQUIREMENTS
Demonstration, written report, and skills test – follow same protocols as above
4-H Horse Stampede – March, 2020
The 4-H Stampede is now moved to July 12, 2020 (the Sunday prior to the start of the State Expo). The contests will be held at Fonner Park in the Bosselman Conference Center starting in the morning. We will have the updated schedule posted on the website in the coming weeks. All youth will need to re-enter if they were previously entered for the March contest. Entries will be due with the entries for State on June 12th.
Extension COVID-19 Response
Nebraska 4-H takes the health and safety of our community very seriously and we are carefully monitoring the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation.
Presently, we have made the decision to move to virtual methods or cancel all events scheduled for March 16-29. While this was an extremely difficult decision, we are putting the health and well-being of our staff/families/youth at the forefront. From March 30 - May 9, Nebraska 4-H programming will resume in a virtual format. This includes all scheduled educational programs, competitive events, and meetings hosted by Nebraska 4-H.
We thank you for your continued patience and support as we learn more from our public health officials and educational partners, and determine the best way to continue serving young people during this time. For updates on Nebraska 4-H and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s evolving position on COVID-19, please visit our website at covid19.unl.edu. We also encourage you to refer to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website for the most current recommendations pertaining to health and personal risk factors.
We will communicate decisions about Nebraska 4-H state-level programs on this page and encourage you to visit your county webpages for up to date information on local programming. Please check back regularly as this is a developing situation and in the coming days, weeks, and months we will know more about the local implications of COVID-19.
As of this point in time all extension events:
- All Extension teaching events from March 16-29 are cancelled or we are working to offer them remotely.
- No in-person 4-H programming during this time. This includes school enrichment, competitive events, club meetings or events, etc.
- From March 30 – May 9, all Extension and 4-H programming will be taught remotely.
- No in-person 4-H programming during this time. This includes school enrichment, competitive events, clubs, etc.
- School enrichment programs have been cancelled or will be offered remotely if possible.
- All local contests and clinics (judging, speech, etc.) should be cancelled unless remote options are available.
- Saunders County Speech contest will continue, however it will all be virtual. We will release more details on that process later this week

Cloning Plants
No Seed, No Worries…Starting plants with a piece of plant you like!
Horticulturists, commercial plant growers and avid gardeners often replicate plants using asexual plant propagation methods, meaning without seed! This is done because many of our plants have characteristics that we really like and the only way to guarantee an exact replica is to clone the “parent” plant. In this VIRTUAL TOUR and demonstration activity, you’ll gain insight as to what you need to replicate a plant and observe a few methods you can use to make your own plant clones!
Presented by; Professor Stacy Adams, Associate Professor of Practice in Horticulture. UNL Agronomy & Horticulture.
All sessions will be recorded and posted to https://4h.unl.edu/virtual-field-trips
