Principal's corner
Throughout the beginning of the year our teams have analyzed data, discussed past practices, and collaborated around our next steps. We have set goals that will help us increase students achievement as well as school culture. We appreciate the work that staff puts into planning, facilitating, and building relationships. We want to shout out all of the students who work hard every day both academically and socially to make this the best place to be! We positively acknowledge our parents, guardians, and community for coming together to support our school, our goals, and most of all our kids to help them grown to their fullest potential.
This year you will see our goals and data that we are working toward, and invite you to celebrate the growth with us!

Counseling Corner Updates!
Kindergarten - Kindness - This month we will be focusing on being able to identify kind and unkind words and actions.
1st Grade- Showing Care and Concern - Empathy can motivate students to respond to others in a caring way. Young students often try to comfort others through physical affection, by offering a toy, or by saying something comforting. However, students may have trouble showing care and concern in situations that are emotionally overwhelming. Feeling empathy and expressing care and concern are different from each other, and each requires practice.
2nd Grade - Showing Compassion - Empathy helps students perceive and understand what others are feeling. It also motivates students to show compassion by using caring words and actions with others. This helps peers feel less isolated, provides emotional support to peers in difficult circumstances, and strengthens friendships. Students who are bullied can experience fewer difficulties if other students are compassionate and show support. Increasing students’ ability to show compassion helps to create a caring and positive school climate. Click here for a home link activity
3rd Grade - Showing Compassion - Empathy helps students perceive and understand what others are feeling. This lesson focuses on the critical next step: putting empathy into action by showing compassion. One of the ways empathy makes a difference in the lives of students is by motivating them to use caring words and actions toward others. Students can channel their empathy into compassion to help peers feel less isolated, provide emotional support to peers in difficult circumstances, and strengthen friendships. Students who are bullied can experience fewer difficulties if other students are compassionate and show them support. Increasing students’ ability to show compassion helps create a caring and positive school climate.
4th Grade -Showing Compassion - One of the ways empathy makes a difference in the lives of students is by motivating them to use caring words and actions toward others. Students can channel their empathy into compassion and help peers feel less isolated, provide emotional support to peers in difficult circumstances, and strengthen friendships. Students who are bullied can experience fewer difficulties if other students are compassionate and show them support. Increasing students’ ability to show compassion helps create a caring and positive school climate. Click here for a home link activity
5th Grade - Being Assertive - It is important for students to learn the differences between assertive, aggressive, and passive ways of communicating. Much of the violence that plagues schools begins with aggressive interactions. Aggressive communication causes problems with other students, school staff, and adults in the community. Students can reduce their involvement in aggressive and violent behaviors by using assertive communication skills to stand up for themselves and get a point across without disrespecting others. Learning to be assertive also has value for students being bullied or otherwise mistreated by peers. These students can use assertiveness as a tool to stand up for their rights. Finally, students need assertiveness skills to get help in school and to communicate respectfully with adults across a variety of situations.
In addition, every month, WGSD will be highlighting a spotlight skill. Please check out each month’s newsletter to see more about the spotlight skill including: keywords, definitions, and areas of focus. Our District Wide SEL Spotlight Skill this month is Relationship Skills
