Your World

By: Georgia Douglas Johnson

Your world is as big as you make it.

I know, for I used to abide

In the narrowest nest in a corner,

My wings pressing close to my side.

But I sighted the distant horizon

Where the skyline encircled the sea

And I throbbed with a burning desire

To travel this immensity.

I battered the cordons around me

And cradled my wings on the breeze,

Then soared to the uttermost reaches

With rapture, with power, with ease!

Main idea

The main idea of this poem is that you can do anything you set your mind to, as long as you are not afraid, and you believe in your self. Georgia talks about battering her cordons, in other words, she blocks out the negative in her life and begins to focus on the positive. Through this poem, I believe, Georgia is telling us to face our fears, because there is light on the other side. Live life to the fullest because you only have one shot, so take advantage of it, while you have the chance!

I chose this poem because

I have been going through a lot in my life lately, and I have felt quite down. I've been doubting my self, and others have been doubting me as well. When I read this poem, it gave me motivation, hope, and peace. I truly believe that if you want something, and you believe you can make it happen, don't ever let someone hold you back, and don't ever listen to negativity, don't even allow it to be around you. All negativity does, is bring you down and make you doubt your self.

R Kelly ~ I believe I can fly

I used to think that I could not go on

And life was nothing but an awful song

But now I know the meaning of true love

I'm leaning on the everlasting arms

If I can see it, then I can do it

If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

[Chorus:]

I believe I can fly

I believe I can touch the sky

I think about it every night and day

Spread my wings and fly away

I believe I can soar

I see me running through that open door

I believe I can fly

I believe I can fly

I believe I can fly

See I was on the verge of breaking down

Sometimes silence can seem so loud

There are miracles in life I must achieve

But first I know it starts inside of me, oh

If I can see it, then I can be it

If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

[Chorus]

Hey, cause I believe in me, oh

If I can see it, then I can do it (I can do it)

If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

[Chorus]

Hey, if I just spread my wings

I can fly

I can fly

I can fly, hey

If I just spread my wings

I can fly-eye-eye-eye

Hum, fly-eye-eye
