Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 10th March 2017
aiming high
It was great to hear an excited buzz in the classrooms on Thursday afternoon as parents, carers and grandparents shared maths challenges with the children. Lots of smiling faces showed enjoyment of maths whilst we continue to strive towards being better mathematicians.
celebrating success
At this morning's assembly, we also celebrated individual success. Mr Dudman was thrilled to receive a letter from Mrs Mackenzie who runs a swimming academy, telling him how proud she is of her youngest volunteer: 'She is quiet and gentle, having a calming effect on the children that are scared. They adore her. She has worked with absolute non-swimmers right through to the coaching group .. what a remarkable young woman.' We were also extremely proud to present Holly Dunkley with her badge, a sign of her achievements in sports leadership.
living lent generously
We hope everyone has been following our 'Living Lent Generously' theme on twitter, facebook or via the texts we've been sending out everyday. All the year groups have had a turn or two pulling one of the acts of kindness out of our Lent jar. This week we've been holding doors open for people, making sure we say thank you and being polite at meal times by eating everything and saying thank you to whoever prepared the food.
Our final act of the week was, 'Chat with someone outside of your usual group of friends,' which Year 6 agreed might be the most challenging as it's always easier and more comfortable to stick with people you know.
expanding experiences
Our Year 5 children went to Bradford this week to visit a mosque. 'Hands on' experiences really help us to understand other faiths, and we are proud of our children's open minded approach. In each year of Key Stage 2 our children have the opportunity to visit a different faith centre, going to a Hindu Temple in Year 3, a Jewish Synagogue in Year 4, the Muslim Mosque in Year 5 and finally the Sikh Gurdwara in Year 6.
We are proud of the wide range of educational visits offered by our school, ranging from local visits to Fountains Abbey or Hackfall Woods to trips much further afield, as far as Spain in fact!
We are able to offer so many visits as the school budget subsidises any shortfall of income from parents who do not make any contribution. We would like to thank all parents who do pay and to assure you that the amount charged covers the cost of one pupil and does not subsidise non-payers. We will be able to continue so many visits only if parents continue to contribute, thank you.
improving reading
Our graph shows a comparison between the number of children reading 5 times or more last week and this week, and we are pleased to see nearly all classes have improved. Paired reading really is fun, and a good way to improve your child's skill, so we hope everyone continues to build on enthusiasm gained after our workshop and World Book Day. Of course, maybe our winners are reading on their own too, as it's Year 6 again!

Thank you to everyone who came along to the disco - another roaring success! Look out for details of our next meeting coming soon, when we hope to organise a fortnightly or monthly film club again.
