Woodfill Elementary

School Counseling Program

Wrapping up a Great Year

This will be the final counseling newsletter of the year. I enjoyed keeping you up to date with the latest information regarding Woodfill's counseling program. I hope everyone has a wonderful and relaxing summer!

Woodfill Cancer Fighters

Wow! Thank you SO much for supporting both Woodfill's Leadership Team and the American Cancer Society. Our Relay for Life team has raised 635 dollars through online support and sold 200 capes!

As a thank you, staff and students are allowed to wear their cape to school on Friday, May 8th! We also hope to see you wearing your cape at the Relay for Life event at Tower Park that evening. The walk starts at 6pm and goes until the following morning.

Thanks again for your support!

Dear Sam

Sam has one final problem left of the school year. Please have your child/students email Sam a letter at woodfillsam@gmail.com or put it in their classroom envelope. Thanks!
Sam: May 2015

Thanks for Writing

Congratulations to Ella Hart (Ms. Reynolds' Class) and Gabe McDermott (Mr. Jones' Class) for solving Sam's April problem of the month!

The 7 Habits

In May, all classrooms will be learning about Habit 6: Synergize. This means:

I value other people's strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different than me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people's ideas because I know that by teaming with others, we can create better solutions than any one of us can alone. I look for Third Alternatives.

Teachers will be reading a story from The 7 Habits of Happy Kids to their classes called, The Big Bad Badgers. In this story, the kids of 7 Oaks use synergy to win their soccer game. Challenge your child/class to watch their favorite sports team and pay attention to how they work together. Also, you could talk about what makes a good and bad team member.

Student of the Month

Congratulations to the following students for earning student of the month! This month all specials teachers (spanish, music, art, P.E., and library) nominated a student that exhibited one of the 7 habits in their classrooms. What an honor!

Classroom Counseling

During the month of May, our classroom counseling lessons will be focused on the 7th habit, Sharpen the Saw. Technically, this habit would be covered in June, but since we only have a couple of days of school during June, I will be teaching about this habit as I visit classrooms this month. As kids and adults, we get so busy, we forget to take care of ourselves, so this habit is very important to remember throughout life.

Here's what it means:

I take care of my body by eating right, exercising, and getting sleep (body). I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school (brain). I spend time with my family and friends (heart). I take time to find meaningful ways to help people (soul). I balance all four parts of myself.

Small Group Counseling

Small group counseling is based on the needs of each grade level. During the month of May, we have several small groups taking place. We have two friendship groups, one self-esteem group, two salvaging sisterhood groups, and social groups.

If you have an idea of a small group topic that would be beneficial for your child/class next year, please email me. Small groups are a great way to process various topics in a smaller setting.

Individual Counseling

As we wrap up the school year, I will be available for any short term individual counseling needs. Students can leave me a note in my mailbox or parents/teachers may contact me at anytime.

The Big Top Festival

We are in need of various chairs and co-chairs to help out at the Big Top Festival next school year. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Shannon Fox at skshiels@yahoo.com. Thank you!
