As the only undergraduate degree program in JABSOM, the Department of Medical Technology is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (www.naacls.org). Following a brief clinical training (MEDT 591) at an affiliate clinical lab, graduates are eligible to challenge a national certification exam. In Hawaiʻi, clinical lab professionals are required to carry both the national certification and the State license.
The Department also engages in international student and faculty exchange with the Niigata University of Health and Welfare, Department of Medical Technology and Medical Engineering.
Kawasaki disease expert Dr. Marian Melish talks possible link to COVID-19
Hawaii Public Radio's Catherine Cruz, host of The Conversation, talks with Dr. Marian Melish about Kawasaki disease research and the disease's possible connection to COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control alerted pediatricians treating children with the coronavirus to look at a possible link with Kawasaki disease - a rare and serious inflammatory disease. JABSOM faculty member Dr. Marian Melish is a doctor at Kapiolani Medical Center and credited with diagnosing the first case of Kawasaki disease in Hawaii decades ago. The disease, first identified in Japan, can damage a child's heart and normally affects children under the age of 5. The CDC reached out to Dr. Melish earlier this month and she will be working with a team of international researchers on a project related to Kawasaki disease and COVID-19. Follow the link above to listen Dr. Melish talk with Cruz about Hawaii's Kawasaki program and COVID-19. There is a lot of interest in this edition of The Conversation, as it had more than 1,000 hits within a few days of its broadcast.
