Phonics & Physical Education
With the help of gym teacher Mr. Volpe, Mrs. D’Amico and Mrs. Davidson’s first grade class at Charles Olbon watched Mr. Volpe model proper hula-hooping to play a vowel identification game. Students were put into teams and had to listen to a word. Students had to figure out what vowel they heard in the word and run to the hula-hoop containing that vowel. Once they figured it out, they had to show off their hula-hooping skills to earn a point for their team. The class had a great time mixing phonics with physical education!

All About Pumpkins
First grade students in Ms. Tonti’s class at Charles Olbon School did a unit study on pumpkins: pumpkin’s life cycle, things made from pumpkins, how to make Jack-O-Lanterns, and using them as compost at the end of the life cycle. Students were also put in groups to dissect a pumpkin, separating the guts and seeds, and counting the seeds to see which group had the most. Ms. Tonti turned the pumpkins into Jack-O-Lanterns. The class is waiting for our seeds to dry out to take home to bake or plant. To conclude their study, students celebrated with a Pumpkin Fest, bringing in various items made from pumpkins for a snack-time picnic while listening to a great read-aloud, The Biggest Pumpkin Ever.
