Here's what's happening in MS this week!
October 28, 2019
Dear parents,
Please make time to attend our math night for grades K-8 at 5:30 on Tuesday, October 29, at the elementary school.
The MS Student Council after-school trip to the Corn Maze at Royal Farms is Tuesday October 29th. Deadline to turn in form and money to Mrs. Goslee is Tuesday morning (before school starts)!
ENGLISH
8th Grade: It’s hard to believe we are already starting the second quarter this week! We are in the final stages of editing and revising our hero essays and will have them ready to submit for competition soon. We have four more grammar lessons and then will be ready for the chapter 3 test. The test will be the first week of November.
SOCIAL STUDIES
6th Grade: In addition to practicing Central and South American geography this week, we will begin our exploration some of the early civilizations such as the Maya, Aztec, and Inca starting with the Mayans. We will be taking a break from vocabulary lists with quiz during the next two weeks.

8th Grade: This past week we had our first test. The students overall did very well and I was very proud of them. We had been working our way up to the signing of the Constitution, and have learned about the Bill of Rights. This coming week we will be doing a Reader’s Theatre, talking about what would have happened had the U.S. not gained our independence from England. Finally, we will be working on truly knowing the meaning of what all being created equal, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness mean.
MATH
6th Grade: 6th graders had a quiz on Thursday using unit rates. We started learning about how to turn fractions and decimals into percents. Don’t forget to attend parent math night on Tuesday!
7th Grade: 7th graders have been busy with repeating and terminating decimals. We continue this topic this week. Don’t forget to attend parent math night on Tuesday!
8th Grade: 8th graders had a quiz last week and this week we dive into functions. Don’t forget to attend parent math night on Tuesday!
SCIENCE
6th Grade: We have been exploring food webs and habitats in Michigan ecosystems. Next up will be a discussion of how nature recycles everything (water cycle, nutrient cycle, rock cycle, etc). We will also be learning about benefits of our ecosystems. (We have Kids in the Kitchen on Tuesday).
7th Grade: Students did a wonderful job on their wonderful world of waves projects! It was a great way to finish out the first marking period. We are now on to studying matter and all its changes. We have learned how to find mass, weight, and volume with different laboratory tools. We will then be exploring density and how density changes given different materials.

ART
8th Grade: We finished up our time together with a quick color pencil animal project. Working on shading and texture and color blending. Next week the 6th graders will start with shading and showing volume and shadows.
MUSIC
Reminder the band concert is on Wednesday, October 30th. Students are allowed to wear costumes to the concert. Dress code applies for costumes. Additionally, students should not wear any face paint that could touch their instrument. No masks either.
We will be celebrating the day after the concert on Halloween with a party. Students can bring snacks to pass. Anyone bringing pop should also bring cups.
PE
6th Grade: 6th grade PE students ended the marking period with their best week of sportsmanship, teamwork, and participation. They also had tremendous improvement in cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance and muscular strength over the last 8 weeks.
Please continue to encourage your student to remain active. Teenagers need 60 minutes of aerobic activity/7days per week, and 20 minutes of muscular endurance and muscular strength activities 3 days/week. Aerobic activities do not have to be sport specific. Think full body movement activities that elevate the heart rate for 60 minutes.
2nd marking period PE students will participate in large group activities and health related physical fitness activities this week. I will also review the PE grading policy and behavioral expectations. (Sportsmanship/Conduct/Safe and Fair Play, Health Related Physical Fitness Participation, Skill Building/Activities/Games Participation, PE Attire)
