Mindset in the Classroom Workshop
Mindset has been a “hot topic” over the last few years. Encouraging students to foster a growth mindset can lead to students not giving up when faced with a challenging problem. Participants will engage in activities, learn about the power of using the word “yet,” see how learning about mindset impacted former students, and discuss how you might use mindset activities with your students.

Critical Race Theory-Interrupting Racism Workshop
Presented by Dr. Calvin Walton, Elementary & Special Education
Critical Race Theory (CRT) originated within the field of legal studies and functions as a race-based framework for understanding power dynamics in the US. During this one hour session, faculty will examine ways to transform current practices in curriculum, pedagogy, teaching and learning into ones that remove color blindness and meritocracy and that create a space where all students are empowered and learning is experiential and engaging.

SoTL Award Winner Presentation - Make Things Count Twice
Presented by Dr. Rami Haddad, Electrical & Computer Engineering
Have you ever felt clueless trying to figure out a solution for an issue impeding students’ teaching and learning? Or have you ever attempted to adopt a new pedagogical approach in your classroom? If so, you are stepping into the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL).
Join us in this workshop to learn more about how you can inform and improve your students’ teaching and learning through SoTL. Learn how you can make things count twice, conduct research and become a well-rounded facilitator of learning. Dr. Haddad will discuss SoTL through his experience as SoTL scholar and provide you with actual research questions, methodology, and outcomes.
The workshop will also introduce you to some useful tools to help you explore research questions you might have and design you SoTL projects to address such questions.

Registration Open: Spring Teaching Online Courses (TOC) Program
The TOC Program certifies faculty to design and deliver online courses at Georgia Southern. The program consists of three parts: a seven-week online workshop, a three-week course development practicum, and two face-to-face technical training workshops. The estimated time commitment is 36-40 hours.
- Part 1. TOC Workshop: January 27-March 15 (7 weeks)
- Part 2. TOC Design Practicum: March 30-April 19 (3 weeks)
- Part 3. Technical training workshops: The two technical workshops may be completed at any time during the semester.
For more information, visit our TOC Program page or contact us at cte@georgiasouthern.edu.
Registration Open: Improving Your Online Course
Experienced online instructors are invited to register for the Quality Matters® (QM) online workshop "Improving Your Online Course" (IYOC).
Benefits for completing IYOC include:
Determine how well your online course meets Quality Matters standards.
Exchange ideas and opinions about the design of quality online courses with Georgia Southern colleagues.
Use the QM Rubric to identify and prioritize course design strategies to improve learner preparation and support, alignment, engagement, web accessibility, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in your online course.
Prerequisites: be certified to teach online at Georgia Southern, have taught online at Georgia Southern for two semesters, and have a fully developed online course to improve.
IYOC Dates: Tuesday, January 28 - Monday, February 10 (3 weeks)
Our best estimate is to expect up to 10 hours per week to complete the workshop.

SoTL FLC
Facilitated by Dr. Diana Botnaru, Health Sciences & Kinesiology, and Dr. Shainaz Landge, Chemistry & Biochemistry
Learn to speak SoTL! This two-semester SoTL Faculty Learning Community (FLC) gives participants a hands-on introduction to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). During the first semester, participants collaborate in small groups to design a SoTL project for implementation in the spring semester. Each group creates and submits required IRB human research paperwork at the end of the first semester. In the second semester of the FLC, participants collect and analyze project data.
Participants must be willing to commit to 6 spring meetings and 3 fall meetings. All participants will receive a copy of Engaging in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (Bishop-Clark and Dietz-Uhler, 2012). Applicants will be notified of acceptance into the FLC one week prior to the first meeting.
The following meetings are Tuesdays at 11 AM in Cone Hall 2029 (Statesboro) & Solms 207 (Armstrong):
1/28 Intro and overview (Ch 1-3)
2/11 Generating research questions (Ch 4)
2/25 Designing the study (Ch 5)
3/10 Collecting Data (Ch 6)
3/24 Considerations for writing an IRB Proposal
4/7 Share IRB draft with peer reviewers (no meeting)
4/21 IRB draft feedback
5/5 Submit IRB for approval (no meeting)
