Juniors
Those of you who are working on building your college list for next year, consider first determining your priorities: what is important to you? Rank the following 6 statements 1 to 6 with 1 being most important to you and 6 being least important.
- I have a dream college I want to go to above all else.
- I want to go to the best ranked school I can get into.
- I’ve always dreamed of becoming something specific and my major is the most important thing.
- I’m interested in the grand college experience: (i.e. Div I sports, big school spirit, Greek life, etc. )
- Finances are key to my college experience.
- I want to play a college level sport so I will go where I can play my sport as part of the competitive school team against other schools.
Make sure to talk with your parents about finances. Knowing how much money you will have to support your education can be a huge factor when selecting colleges for your list. Use these priorities when selecting schools for your list. If playing baseball in college is most important to you, then make sure the college has a baseball team and that you have a chance of making the team.
Sophomores
Are you looking for something meaningful to do this summer? I get many students asking me if I know of any "internships". Usually companies are looking for college students to fill their internship positions. Pilotcity is a program that is designed to help students in middle school through high school build the skills they need to prove their value as an intern to a company. Pilotcity has partnered with many employers who have ideas that they would like solutions for. As a student, you create an account on Pilotcity, explore employers and read about their proposed projects. You select a project and then proceed online through the project development process to propose a solution to one of the employer projects. Your final project then becomes your "interview" for a summer internship with that employer.
Check out the projects at Pilotcity.com and see if you are interested in any of them. You need a token to proceed, but the Santa Clara Office of Education has provided CUHSD with token. Contact me at rklaus@cuhsd.org to get a token for your project. Get started now EARNING a Summer Internship!

Klaus's Kernels
Here are a few FUN FACTS for you fun fact fans:
- What became of Adragon Eastwood De Mello who was mentioned in the last issue of this newsletter? His father pushed him in mathematics claiming he was a genius, so did he win a Nobel Prize in Mathematics or Physics? No, he did not. He changed his name and spent more time trying to be a kid than a student. Six years after taking his degree from UC Santa Cruz, he graduated from Homestead High School, receiving many C's and a few D's along the way. At 26, Adragon worked at Home Depot in East Palo Alto, but that was in 2003. Twenty years later we have no idea what he is doing. This is an example of how pushing a child ahead academically didn't pay off.
- University of Nevada, Las Vegas has no mascot! They are the "Rebels" but even after hosting a contest, with a name like Rebel, no suitable mascot has been suggested. Maybe you can choose the next mascot? What would that be?

Industrial Designer
Industrial designers combine art, business, and engineering to develop the concepts for manufactured products such as cars, home appliances, and toys. They combine these fields to make products that people use every day. Industrial designers consider the function, aesthetics, production costs, and usability of products when developing new product concepts.
Industrial designers typically do the following:
- Consult with clients to determine requirements for designs
- Research the various ways a particular product might be used, and who will use it
- Sketch ideas or create renderings, which are images on paper or on a computer that provide a visual of design ideas
- Use computer software to develop virtual models of different designs
- Create physical prototypes of their designs
- Examine materials and manufacturing requirements to determine production costs
- Work with other specialists, such as mechanical engineers and manufacturers, to evaluate whether their design concepts will fill needs at a reasonable cost
- Evaluate product safety, appearance, and function to determine if a design is practical
- Present designs and demonstrate prototypes to clients for approval
Common fields of degree include fine arts, engineering, or architecture. Most industrial design programs include courses in drawing, computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), and three-dimensional modeling, as well as courses in business, industrial materials and processes, and manufacturing methods. If you like both art and engineering (or solving problems) this career could be a good fit for you.
